Following the breakup of the Republic of Yugoslavia into Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia , NATO and the EU became involved in peacekeeping efforts with over 40,000 Canadians having served. Canadians were overwhelmed by the atrocities committed by warring ethnic groups and may went on to suffer PTSD and were not prepared for the level of fighting especially in Bosnia and Sarajevo.
