You have a patient with multiple fractures in both arms and legs...what would be the best splinting device?

Use the long spine board.

If only legs, it would be appropriate to use long leg splints, pillow, etc only.

Depending on mechanism of injury - (long fall) with potential hidden injuries...long spine board makes good sense

78 year old male, has been sick for a couple days, vomiting, pale sweaty and shallow breathing.  Heartrate is 70...what could be the cause of the low heartrate

With elderly you need to look at medications in addition to obvious signs.   They could be on a med that already is affecting the HR.

100

Patient has extreme anxiety of the wound she has will be disfiguring.   What do you share with her.

Don't lie..(like it will be okay......)  Tell them they have specialists at the hospital that will give it the attention it needs.

100

Current triage systems rely on what patient assessment tools

Breathing / circulation / and LOC

100

One of the first things you ask a patient that can help you with immediate assistance for them.

How is their work of breathing?

Ask them if they are having any trouble breathing...depending on their answer react with the necessary treatment

200

Significant injury from vehicle accident - how do you provide c spine support

In line stabilization.   Can be held manually or is absolutely necessary before measuring / applying a c collar

200

Pregnant late stage female injured in a fall down the stairs-...is unconscious    Skin:  cool / pale / clammy

BP down  / pulse rapid

Shock - possibly from blood loss

200

What is one of the most important treatments for shock

Giving high flow 02-getting them warm is also important, but if available-use 02

200

In the START system...what is the first determining factor of triage

ability to walk

200

How can you quickly ascertain if a patient has low BP

Take a radial pulse....If a helper is available, they can be asked to take a manual one.

300

During secondary exam, patient is having trouble breathing due to a sternum injury.  What do you do?

Use BVM to support ventilations and rapid tranport

300

Patient presents with abdominal pain , has rigid abdomen that is sensitive to the touch.   What do you do...

Keep him warm...could be in shock with a loss of temperature.  Don't keep poking the stomach.  Might make it worse.

300

How much oxygen should you give someone who is in cardiac arrest?

As much as you have....With no 02 available a BVM gives more oxygen than a breath

300

Are there differences between an adult triage assessment and a pediatriac triage assessment

There are differences, but the principles are the same.

300

If you have excessive bleeding or a head injury - what can we do to help minimize shock in addition to oxygen

Keep the patient as warm as possible...blankets or increasing the heat in the back of the ambulance are options.

400

Sucking chest wound - first step in treating patient

put glove hand on wound while continuing to assess.  Put on an occlusive dressing when available.

400

What does an absent radial pulse represent

Low BP

400

What can you try if a patient seems frightened of you...

If you are standing, go down on a knee if possible and talk to them directly.   Be calming and empathic - slow, engaging with just the right amount of hurry

400

Why is it important to have trained personnel stay with the triaged green patients when there are others to save

A patient originally triaged as green may decompensate at anytime which may be missed unless trained personnel are watching for these changes

400
to ensure you have found and treated all noteworthy injuries.....what can you do

Do a full (partial) body fluid sweep with emphasis on the surrounding areas

500

Patient presents with a cut that has been bleeding for many minutes without being able to control with direct pressure alone

Take over direct pressure and apply tourniquet

500

What does a trachea that is not in midline potentially represent

Some type of pnemothorax

500

What would be an appropriate response to "Am I going to die..........."

The most important thing is to be honest...don't lie.  But give gentle reassurance if possible

500

Why are patients triaged black

They are imminent or are already deceased

500

why do we take PMS during an assessment that includes excessive blood loss

To look for neurovascular compromise
