What is the study or science of drugs
What is pharmacology
the official name assigned by the "United States Adopted Names Council" (only one generic name per compound), nonproprietary name.
What is Generic drug name
What are ways that drugs interact ?
What is •Drug - Drug Interaction
•Drug - Food Interaction
•Additive Effect
•Synergistic Effect
Physical Incompatibility
respect for the information that a nurse learns from professional involvement with patients/clients
What is Confidentiality ?
Plunger, Barrel, Syringe hub, needle stick prevention safety device, needle, trailing ring, leading ring
What is Parts of needle and syringe ?
Drugs that have been discovered, but are not financially viable and therefore have not been "adopted" by any drug company
What is Orphan drugs
is the brand name; - given by the drug manufacture under which it is marketed, proprietary name.
What is Trade drug name
Terms used in which the drug should be given with caution or not given at all
What is Contraindications & Precautions
The use of many different drugs concurrently in treating a patient, who often has several health problems.
What is Polypharmacy?
-Describes its diameter
- The larger the gauge, the smaller the diameter.
What is needles gauge ?
the study of drug movement throughout the body, drug metabolism, & drug excretion.
What is Pharmacokinetics
What are the 2 primary drug classifications
What is Pharmaceutical class and Therapeutic class
Whether drug should be taken with or without food
What specific vital signs to monitor
What lab values may be affected by the drug, or ordered to check a drug's effectiveness or toxicity
What is Nursing Considerations ?
capacity: 0.5 to 1 mL in size, (comes in both sizes 0.5 mL and 1mL syringes) calibrated in hundredths: (0.01 mL) and tenths (0.1 mL)
What is Tuberculin Syringes ?
varies from 3/8 to 3 inches
What is needle length?
concentration of drug in the blood serum that produces the desired effect without causing toxicity
What is Therapeutic Level
how the drug works to produce a therapeutic effect.
What is Mechanism of Action (MOA)
•ID site
•Cleanse site, allow to dry
•Don gloves
•Hold skin taut
•Insert needle at 10-15˚ angle with bevel up about 1/8"
•Do not aspirate
•Inject medication slowly, observing for a wheal or bleb
•Withdraw needle at same angle; do not massage—press gently with gauze
Check in 48 to 72 hours
What is Intradermal Injection Procedure ?
-They are calibrated in units.
- U-100 syringes are available in 50 and 100 unit capacities.
What is insulin syringes ?
0.5 to 60 (100)mL
Make sure the size matches the volume of the drugs to be given as well as the desired pressure flow.
What is Syringe size / range
The effects that drugs have on the body.
Is the process by which drugs alter cell physiology and affect the body
Pharmacodynamics
If the patient s taking more than one medication make sure of the interaction or possible incompatibilities.
What is Drug Interactions & Incompatibilities
1.The nurse provide services with respect for the patient/client's human dignity and uniqueness.
2.The nurse safeguards patient/client's right to privacy.
3.The nurse acts to safeguard patient/client from incompetent, unethical, or illegal practice.
4.The nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for nursing judgments and actions.
5.The nurse maintains competence in nursing.
What is ANA Code of Ethics in Drug Administration ?
•Needle & syringe size: TB or 3cc; 3/8"-5/8" (or up to 1"); 25-30g
•Amount: Not >1mL (book says 2 mL)
•Select fatty site (keep 2" away from umbilicus)
•Cleanse site
•Using thumb & forefinger, pinch area of fatty tissue
•Insert needle at 45 or 90° angle
•90° angle when 2" can be grasped or using a short needle (insulin needles usually short)
•45° angle in thinner or underweight patients or using a longer needle
•Inject slowly
•Wait 10 seconds
•Withdraw needle quickly & activate needle safety feature (do not aspirate)
•Massage site (except insulin & heparin)
•Discard needle/syringe in sharps container
What is Subcutaneous Injection Procedure ?
•Insert needle at a 90° angle
•Stabilize syringe and aspirate by pulling back on plunger...if blood returns, discard and start procedure over (unless your facility has a no aspirate policy)
•Inject medication slowly
•Remove needle quickly and activate needle safety feature
•Massage site
•Dispose of needle/syringe in a sharp's container
What is Intramuscular Injection Procedure ?
