What is good, comfortable, happy?
When you use unexpected behavior, people have these feelings about you.
What is annoyed, uncomfortable, or upset?
It in this situation, it is expected that you avoid complaining—it’s just part of the routine of the day. Change into pajamas or your night clothes. Brush your teeth and do other hygiene tasks. Say goodnight to your parents. Get in bed. Read or turn off the light in this situation. These are hidden rules/expectations.
What is bed time?
When your teacher is talking, your mouth and body should be doing this.
What is quiet mouth, and still body that is ready to pay attention?
Following hidden social rules is considered this type of behavior.
What is expected behavior?
Refusing to follow the hidden social rules, or not even thinking about the rules considered this type of behavior.
Unexpected Behavior
These behaviors are expected when eating with a group of people.
What are chewing with your mouth closed, waiting to talk until you are done chewing, not sharing food, and not touching other people or their food?
When we correct other kids, it is best to do it when there are this many people around.
What is, just you and them, or a very small group?
There are certain questions you do not ask others because they’re considered personal questions. It is expected that we do not ask questions about these things.
What are asking about someone’s weight, grades, scores on tests, income, religion, and politics?
True or False: Unexpected behavior at a restaurant is asking your waiter or waitress lots of questions about the food, even when you already know the answer.
What is true? This is unexpected because the waiter or waitress has other tables to wait. If they have already answered your questions, you should let them move on.
These behaviors are expected when you are at home with your family.
What is using a kind and inside voice, talking without interrupting, and maintaining at least one arms length away, unless otherwise told to come closer?
When you have something to share, this behavior is expected to indicate to your teacher that you would like to say something.
What is raising your hand?
It is expected that we use humor in ways that are expected. Expected humor includes these things.
What is considering the time, place, and the people you are with?
What is false? This is unexpected. Adults should not ask kids to keep secrets.
It in this situation, it is expected that you avoid distractions, or at least try to minimize how distracted you are. It is your job to be focused and listening to the adult. Listen to their words. Follow instructions. Ask questions if you need help. Do not interrupt or correct them. Try and focus on the material and information. These are hidden rules/expectations.
What is school time/learning time?
When you do this, you are listening to the teacher and hearing what is being said. You know what is being said and your mind is not wandering.
What is focusing on the topic?
When someone asks you this, even if you don’t like it, try to find something positive to say. Even though your answer may not be totally honest, it is important to not tell the entire truth.
What is, "do you like my new hair cut?"
True or False: Your sister had a bad day at school because other kids were unkind. You see she is sad and give her a big hug. This is expected because she is sad and you care for her.
What is false? This is unexpected. Even though you care about your sister and know she is sad, you still need to ask first before giving anyone a hug or getting in their personal space bubble.
You just lost a competitive basketball game during gym. These behaviors are expected.
What is congratulating others, being a good sport, and not focusing too much on losing?
This helps the teacher to see that you are paying attention, following along, doing the work, and completing the tasks you are supposed to.
