What is a scatter plot?
A type of graph with lots of points (or something close to that is acceptable)
100
What are parallel lines?
Lines that are in the same plane that never touch. (You have to have the "same plane" part in there because otherwise, you could mean skew lines.)
100
What are perpendicular lines?
Lines in the same plane, that intersect at a 90 degree angle.
100
What is a translation?
It's when you move the graph up, down, left, right, or flip it.
100
What's the line called that you draw on a scatter plot that shows the general direction of the points?
Trend Line
200
What does each point represent?
A set of data
200
What is the relationship between the slopes of two parallel lines?
They are equal
200
What is the relationship between the slopes of two perpendicular lines?
They are the opposite reciprocal!
200
Describe how y = |x| + 2 would look
a V, with the vertex at (0,2) ... it's the absolute value graph, shifted UP 2
200
What's the general equation for point-slope form?
y-y1 = m(x-x1)
300
Describe the relationship between y and x for a graph with a positive correlation
As y goes up, x goes up and/or when y goes down, x goes down.
300
Given the line y = 8x - 2, Write another equation of a different line that is parallel to that.
y = 8x plus/minus anything... as long as the slope is the same! Examples: y = 8x - 3, y = 8x + 1, y = 8x - 19272592
300
Given the line y = 8x - 2, Write another equation of a different line that is perpendicular to that.
y = -1/8x plus/minus anything! As long as the slope is -1/8 it's ok! Examples: y = -1/8x + 4, y = -1/8x, y = -1/8x - 5125
300
Describe how y = |x - 2| would look
a V, with the vertex at (2,0)... it is the |x| graph but shifted to the RIGHT 2
300
Given that lines a and b are parallel and that a third line, line c is perpendicular to line a, what else can we deduce?
that lines c and b are perpendicular as well
400
Describe the relationship between y and x for a graph with a negative correlation
When x goes up, y goes down and/or when y goes up, x goes down
400
Given the equation y = 5x + 1, write an equation for a parallel line that has a y intercept of 6
y = 5x + 6
400
Given the equation y = 5x + 1, write an equation for a perpendicular line that has a y intercept of 6
y = -1/5x + 6
400
Describe how y = -|x| would look
a tee-pee (upside down V), but it doesn't shift/move- the vertex stays at the origin (0,0)
400
What's the fancy word Ms. Breitbach uses in class that means "it's against what you would normally think" when she is talking about graphs that are like this |x - 3|
Anti-intuitive
500
Is correlation the same as causation? Explain.
No. Correlation merely tells us the relationship between the variables, but does not say that one CAUSED the other- in fact they might have nothing to do with each other!

Given the line y = -1/2x + 5, write an equation for a parallel line that passes through the point (-1, 9)
y-9 = -1/2(x - -1) or y-9 = -1/2(x+1)
500
Given the line y = -1/2x + 5, write an equation for a perpendicular line that passes through the point (-1, 9)
y-9 = 2(x--1) or y-9=2(x+1)
500
Describe how y = -|x + 2| - 8 would look
It's a teepee (upside down V) that has a vertex at (-2, -8)... it's flipped upside down and shifted 2 to the left and 8 down.

When is your quiz, what is all going to be on it, and what will you be doing for at least one hour tonight?
Our quiz is tomorrow! It will cover the past 3 sections including scatter plots, parallel and perpendicular lines, and translations of y = |x|. Be prepared to write equations of lines given two points, a point and a slope, or a y-intercept and the slope! Which means you will be studying for at least one hour tonight!!! Good luck!
