Another important aspect (of writing your first draft) is understanding when to use documentation. Documentation means that you have made a reference to your source (your direct quote) and you are giving credit to that source (the person who wrote it). In parenthetical documentation, you state the author’s last name and the page number on which you found your information within the parentheses following the sentence that contain the cited information. If there is no author, you document the name of the source.

A Works Cited page is a list of the sources that you have used to write your research draft. The Works Cited page is to be placed on the last page of your research draft. Because you have already made a card for each of your sources, all you need to do to prepare your Works Cited is to alphabetize the cards by author’s last names. If the source does not include an author, alphabetize the works cited card according to the first word in the title.
