Explain the purpose of checks and balances and how they work with the 3 branches. Give examples.
Checks and balances are used to prevent one branch of government from having too much power. This means each branch can limit the power of the other branches. For example a president can veto a law the legislative branch can make. However the legislative branch can go around the president if enough agree. Also the judicial branch can determine if a law is constitutional. The president chooses the Supreme Court justices and the Senate approves them.
