Appendicular Skeleton

  1. Forms the shoulder girdle, arm bones, pelvic girdle, and leg bones.

100

Diaphysis

The long shaft of a long bone

100

Fontanels

  1. Soft spots" that allow for the enlargement of the skull as brain growth occurs. These are areas where the cranium has not solidified.

100

Medullary Canal

  1. A cavity in the diaphysis (long shaft of the bone) that is filled with yellow marrow.

100

Periosteum

  1. A tough membrane that covers the outside of bone. It contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and osteoblasts (special cells that form new bone tissue).

200

Axial Skeleton

Forms the main trunk of the body and is composed of the skull, spinal column, ribs, and breastbone

200

Endosteum

  1. A membrane that lines the medullary canal and keeps the yellow marrow intact. It also produces some bone growth.

200

Foramina

  1. Openings in bones that allow nerves and blood vessels to enter or leave the bone.

200

Metacarpals

  1. The five bones that make up the palm of the hand.

200

Phalanges

The bones that make up the fingers and toes

300

Carpals

  1. The eight bones that make up the wrist (palm of the hand).

300

Epiphysis

The two extremities, or ends, of a long bone

300

Humerus

The upper arm bone

300

Metatarsals

The five bones of the foot

300

Radius

  1. One of the lower arm bones (on the thumb side).

400

Clavicles

The collarbones

400

Femur

  1. The thigh bone. It is the heavy, long bone of the leg.

400

Joints

  1. Areas where two or more bones join together.

400

Os Coxae

  1. The two pelvic bones (coxal, or hip, bones).

400

Red Marrow

  1. Found in certain bones, such as the vertebrae, ribs, sternum, and cranium, and in the proximal ends of the humerus and femur. It is where hematopoiesis (blood cell production) takes place.

500

Cranium

The spherical structure that surrounds and protects the brain

500

Fibula

  1. The slender smaller bone of the lower leg.

500

Ligaments

  1. Connective tissue bands that help hold bones together at joints.

500

Patella

The kneecap

500

Ribs

Attach to the thoracic vertebrae on the dorsal surface of the body
