With a grand total of 61 cases, this was HRL's most frequent alleged CLS violation in Fall 2023.
What is Alcohol?
Noise was our fourth most common alleged CLS violation in Fall 2023, with 45 of you deciding to write an IR about it. This period of time happens Sunday-Thursday after 10:00 PM and Friday-Saturday after 12:00 AM.
What are Quiet Hours?
Roommate conflicts come in many shapes and sizes, but this policy was consistently mentioned (35x!) as a reason why students wanted their roommate to move out NOW.
What is the Guest Policy (also known as CLS 4.23?)
Students brought a lot of things to campus that they shouldn't have. 50 times, according to Maxient. CLS 3.3 outlines this category of items that aren't allowed in the halls, regardless of where a student lives.
What are Prohibited Items?
This community, known for its capacity to host large gatherings, racked up the largest number of individual file IDs in Maxient during Fall 2023.
What is Laker Village North?
CARE team members all agree: medical events were on the rise in Fall 2023. 142 of them occurred last semester according to Maxient, and we needed our campus partners' support in responding to them. This team of medical personnel provides pre-hospital treatment and stabilization.
What is Emergency Medical Services?
The possession and use of this type of toy, which isn't explicitly mentioned in our HRL Community Living Standards, caused trouble across several communities in Fall 2023, even requiring GVPD intervention at times.
What is a gel blaster gun?
This individual triages any IRs that are referred to OSCCR.
Who is Ben Witt?
CLS 3.4 describes this category of item allowed in certain places and spaces, which includes things like air fryers or decorative string lights.
What are Regulated Items?
This South Campus living center saw the highest number of HRL CARE and Conduct reports in Fall 2023.
What is Murray?
We stumbled upon quite a few animals who were not registered in the halls in Fall 2023. Of the 21 reports we received, this animal was by far our most common unregistered guest.
What is a cat?
Our most frequently reported hallway recreation activity, by a long shot
What is scootering indoors?
This individual serves as the Assistant Director of Public Safety & Captain for GVPD.
Who is Captain Leah Heaton?
Decorating your apartment with empty alcohol bottles and boxes is a timeless college tradition, but unfortunately it's against our policy. Also known as CLS 4.3, this policy was Niemeyer's most alleged violation and describes how NOT to furnish your living space.
What is Alcohol Paraphernalia?
Despite this North Campus community's relatively low numbers when it comes to most alleged CLS violations, it's home to the building that violated our Quiet Hours policy the most often.
What is WHOJ? (Looking at you, Hoobler.)
We were 1 CARE report short of 400 related to Personal Well-Being/Safety as an Issue of Concern, our most common reason for referring a student to CARE. This campus partner is responsible for triaging any and all CARE reports that come in through the public reporting link.
Who is Emily First?
Pranks that went too far were a theme in Fall 2023. This community is home to residents who pranked so hard, other offices had to get involved in adjudicating their cases.
What is South Apartments OR what is the Back 4? I will accept both answers.
Fighting behavior was unfortunately a major trend in Fall 2023. According to the HRL Duty & Crisis Response Guide, this the NUMBER ONE priority for RAs when responding to incidents.
What is safety? Maintaining your personal physical safety and the safety of our students comes before anything else. Call 911 immediately if you become aware of fighting behavior, and make sure to report up if you're made aware of a fight after the fact.
What happens when residents or their guests say "hey you can't have that?" to the RA requesting an ID? Ask the RAs in this residence hall, which is home to the highest number of incidents involving non-GVSU guests.
What is Hills? (And the answer is: you ask the student or their guest for their name, and housing assignment if they admit to living on campus.) Refusing to comply with your directions can result in additional restorative measures, so make sure to document if students are 1) giving you a hard time about identifying themselves, or 2) giving you false information.
If we're looking at just the first week of classes during Fall 2023, this North Campus area saw the highest volume of any type of report.
What is Holton-Hooker?
Smoking too close to the residence hall entrances caused a bit of chaos in Fall 2023, including sending a trash can up in flames so big you could see them across the street. This policy, otherwise known as CLS 3.2, includes a piece about reporting facilities emergencies in a timely fashion.
What is Resident Responsibilities? (And shoutout to our residents Downtown for being shining examples of how to follow CLS 3.2 Resident Responsibilities.)
CLS 4.47 Weapons and Dangerous Materials made a few appearances in Fall 2023. RAs in one of our North Campus communities even stumbled upon a sword during winter closing! This is the maximum length of a blade before it becomes a CLS violation.
What is 3 inches?
Covering smoke alarms is a serious violation of more than just the HRL Community Living Standards. This behavior puts entire buildings of students at risk, which is why HRL charges a fee of $200 for tampering with or removing a smoke alarm. This is the word for what a resident must pay back to the university if they're found responsible for endangering their community in this way.
What is restitution?
In a sea of residents possessing items they're not supposed to have, there's one building where students seem to be especially careful about reading our Community Living Standards. This North Campus residence hall was home to the fewest amount of alleged CLS violations, with only THREE IRs for the entire semester (including winter closing!)
What is Devos?
Second only to a residence hall on South Campus, this living center is home to the next highest number of students found responsible for any alleged CLS or Anchor violation.
What is Kistler? This was so fascinating to me! If you look at the data by location, Kistler appears quiet relative to other areas...but if you sort it by where involved students live, the data tells a different story. Kistler individuals tended to be involved in incidents outside of their hall, but they were found responsible for violating some GVSU policy a whopping 128 times! (Murray residents came in first though, with 157 responsible findings.) No worries though - off campus incidents still have us beat by quite a bit, which is proof that living on campus rules.
