The body of water Jehovah parted for Israel to escape

What is the Red Sea?

Exodus 14:21

The identification of the Red Sea as the body of water Jehovah parted for the Israelites is supported by the biblical text and historical context. Here’s how we know:

Biblical Evidence

  1. Hebrew Name:

    • The original Hebrew text refers to the body of water as "Yam Suf" (יַם-סוּף), which is commonly translated as "Red Sea." This name appears in Exodus 13:18 and Exodus 15:4.
  2. Exodus 15:4:

    • The victory song of Moses mentions: "Pharaoh’s chariots and his army he has cast into the sea, and his finest warriors have sunk in the Red Sea."
  3. Miraculous Crossing:

    • In Exodus 14:21-22, Jehovah parts the waters, creating dry land for the Israelites to walk through. This grand scale aligns with the Red Sea, which is significant enough to accommodate such a dramatic event.

Geographical Context

  • The Red Sea (or its northern extensions, such as the Gulf of Suez) lies on the traditional route out of Egypt toward the Sinai Peninsula. This would have been the logical escape path for the Israelites as they fled Egypt.

Supporting Clues

  1. Deep Water:

    • The description of the "waters forming a wall" on both sides (Exodus 14:22) suggests a deep body of water, consistent with the Red Sea rather than a shallow marsh.
  2. Pharaoh's Army's Demise:

    • The account says the waters "returned" and drowned the Egyptian army (Exodus 14:28). This aligns with the Red Sea's size and depth being capable of such destruction.

While some scholars debate alternative locations, the traditional identification with the Red Sea (or Yam Suf) remains the most widely accepted based on the scriptural and geographical evidence.

Revelation speaks of a symbolic “wild beast” that represents earthly governments united against God.

What is Revelation 13?

Revelation 13:1-2 describes a wild beast with ten horns and seven heads, symbolizing the composite political systems that oppose God's sovereignty.

Ten Horns:

  • Horns in Bible prophecy often symbolize power or kingship (Daniel 7:24). The ten horns represent all the political powers that have derived their authority from Satan and have ruled over the earth at various times.

Seven Heads:

  • The seven heads symbolize a succession of major world powers that have dominated human history and have directly impacted God’s people. These are commonly identified as:
    • Egypt
    • Assyria
    • Babylon
    • Medo-Persia
    • Greece
    • Rome
    • Anglo-American world power (continuing to our day)

This verse says we should not be “busybodies in other people’s matters.

What is 1 Peter 4:15?

Peter grouped busybodies with serious offenses like thievery and murder, showing that such behavior is harmful and displeasing to Jehovah. This is because meddling can disrupt peace and unity among individuals and within the congregation.

By focusing on their own spiritual growth and respecting others' privacy, Christians can avoid these pitfalls and maintain peace.
