Gives the reader of a book or passage additional information about the subject of the text.
Subtitle
Divides the text into sections and explains what that particular section will be about.
A short description explaining what a photograph is about.
Caption
Shows what something in the reading looks like and is usually drawn by an artist.
Illustration
This shows what something looks like and is taken with a camera.
Photograph
A resource containing the definitions of key words that are found within the text of a reading.
Glossary
If I needed to find the location of a specific topic as it appears in a book, I would use this tool.
Index
Lays the book out by chapters and gives location of chapters by using page numbers.
Table of Contents
Identifies the topic of the passage and tells what it will be about.
Title
Features found within nonfiction texts that help to bring the text to life.
Text Features
The instrumental used to exhibit where places and or events are located.
Map
Makes lists easier to read and understand- a way to organize the list.
Bullet Points
A classifying name or phrase explaining certain parts an image or illustration in the text.
Label
An additional resource found within the text that supplies the reader with interesting facts and extra information about the topic being read.
Fact Box/Side Bar
A design feature given to a word that shows its importance and links that particular word to the glossary where its definition can be found.
Bold Print
This is the first place the name of the publisher of the book will be found, along with other information that identifies the book and those who produced it.
Title Page
Explains information, the structure, or how something works in a visual way- intended to make a concept more tactile.
Diagram
A design element assigned to specific words to show they are important, often used to place emphasis on the idea that the word references.
Italics
An instrument used to organize facts in a linear way that makes the information easier to understand, analyze, compare and/or contrast.
Table
An organizer in the texts that is used to present, compare and/or contrast information in a visual way.
