What are the 4 sacred months or inviolable months in Islam?

  • The fact that they’re scared means that no fighting, transgression or injustice should be done in those sacred or forbidden months.
  • Also, being sacred/forbidden means they heighten one’s sense of presence and mindfulness of Allah in order to help one be more disciplined holistically and God-conscious.

Dhu al-Qadah, Dhu'l-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab

  • Dhulkaedah, which literally means; to be associated with the act of sitting down, was chosen because it was the time to step down from war (extracted from the word ‘qaedah’ in Arabic) and make preparations for the journey of pilgrimage.
  • Dhulhijjah reflected its namesake; possessor pilgrimage. Hence sacredness of the month had to be obeyed because people were focused on their pilgrimage.
  • Muharram itself means; to have been made sacred. This was the month where the pilgrims would return to their land and adjust to life as it was.
  • Rejab is known to be the month in the middle of the year and that it was sacred so that the people could perform Umrah (minor pilgrimage). The meaning of Rejab comes from its morphed state, ‘tarjeeb’ which translates to; being made great.
