An example would be, if a resident tells you he is in pain and requests pain medication. If you do not follow through on this request, this could be seen as neglect because the resident suffered physical harm or mental anguish.

You must report any reasonable suspicion of a crime against a resident at your center immediately

Wanda and Rose are roommates at a nursing home. At shift change, you are informed that Rose had to go to the hospital because she had a mild stroke in the night. Later in the day, you see Wanda in the hallway and she asks where Rose is. Can you tell Wanda that Rose went to the hospital because she had a stroke?

No. You cannot share this information with Wanda because she is an unauthorized individual. Rose or her family would need to authorize the release of this information to her roommate. Instead, tell Wanda “I need to check with a nurse to see about your roommate’s condition.”

Fill out a concern

Attempt to address/fix the concern right away and if not able, turn concern in to SS who will assign to the correct department director

Follow up with resident in a day or two to ensure that they are satisfied with results.
