The thinnest layer of the atmosphere. All of the Earth exists here. it is also where all clouds and precipitation develop.
What is the Troposphere?
An instrument used to measure wind speed.
What is an Anemometer?
Animals that eat both animals and plants. Humans and bears are examples of these.
What are Omnivores?
The process in which a liquid changes into a gas.
What is Evaporation?
The most common type of severe storm formed in cumulonimbus clouds causing heavy rain, thunder and lightning.
What is a Thunderstorm?
The force put on a given area by the air above it. This decreases as we go higher in elevation and it is measured with a barometer. It is also the best indicator of weather/ precipitation.
What is Air Pressure?
Part of the atmosphere where air moves in a circular pattern because of unequal heating and cooling. When one of these becomes too strong, a tornado is formed.
What is a Convection Cell?
A relationship in which one organism lives on or in another organism to survive, but may hurt the other organism. For example, dogs and ticks have this type of relationship.
What is Parasitism?
Any form of water particles (rain, sleet, snow, hail) that falls to Earth.
What is Precipitation?
A violent, whirling wind that moves across the ground in a narrow path destroying anything in its way. They are most common in the Midwest and the South in the U.S.
What is a Tornado?
Rain, Snow, Hail and Sleet are examples of this.
What is Precipitation?
A wind that blows from the sea towards the land. This type of wind occurs during the morning or day along the coast because the heat from the sun (radiation) heats the land more quickly than the water.
What is a Sea Breeze?
The continuous movement of water between Earth's surface and the air, changing liquid to gas to liquid.
What is the Water Cycle?
Precipitation that flows across on land's surface or falls into rivers or streams.
What is Run-Off?
A great rise in the sea level along the coast caused by low pressure. They are often the cause of heavy damage on the coast during a hurricane.
What is a Storm Surge?
The height above sea level. As we go higher in this the temperature decreases.
What is Altitude or Elevation?
The curving of the path of a moving object caused by the Earth's rotation. This is the reason most storms in the U.S. move from west to east.
What is the Coriolis Effect?
One of the Earth's large ecosystems with its own kind of climate, soil, plants and animals. There are six major kinds on Earth.
What is a Biome?
A cloud at ground level.
What is Fog?
A very destructive storm with high winds and heavy rain. They are ranked by their wind speed and are most common on the coastal regions of the U.S. (especially Florida & Louisiana). They are formed over warm ocean water near the equator and move towards land. They are characterized areas of very low air pressure.
What is a Hurricane?
An instrument used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes.
What is a Richter Scale?
A wind that blows from the land towards the water. This type of wind occurs at night (after sunset) when the cooler air above the land replaces the rising, warm air above the water (ocean).
What is a Land Breeze?
A relationship between two organisms where one organism benefits while the other organism is neither helped nor harmed. Trees and vines have this type of relationship.
What is Commensalism?
A wind current that flows from west to east across the U.S. and moves weather systems around.
What is the Jet Stream?
An instrument used to find/ track storms and predict the weather.
What is Doppler Radar?
