A runaway trolley is headed toward two babies, John Tukey (the "Father of data science"), and Olivia Dean, while one of Maryan’s best friends (insert one of us) is strapped to the other track, and Maryan must decide whether to pull the lever.

In this dilemma, Maryan would consider this factor most:

A) The number of lives saved in total
B) The potential future good of each person
C) The long-term consequences after the deaths

Bonus: Guess if Maryan would pull the lever or not.

What is B) The potential future good of each person

Maryan has graduated from Berkeley with her amazing degree in Data Science and is now in the world to do wonderful things.

Maryan JUST learns that an algorithm she helped build could greatly reduce GLOBAL hunger and homelessness, but at the cost of disproportionate harming of 100,000 Asian women in rural Vietnam, which is where her algorithm machinery is. Her algorithm also is non-profit, making her 0 dollars.

Her model is accurate, legal, widely praised, and has no equally effective alternative.

Maryan would respond by:

A) Quitting the job. She no longer wants to be part of something that harms others. Her hard work is someone else's and she has to live with that.

B) Destroying the algorithm. Vietnamese women are no longer harmed, but the people who she already helped have to GO BACK to being hungry and homeless. Current hungry and homeless people would stay hungry and homeless.

C) Choose to keep running the algorithm. The good (helping 673 million hungry people and 318 million homeless people) outweighs the bad (hurting 100,000 poor asian women).
