The cotton gin made it far easier to produce large amounts of cotton fiber for foreign export.  The machine helped slaveholders purchase more cotton plantations and expand slavery across the United States.  King Cotton became the most important export in the United States and fed northern industry.

In 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation freeing slaves in states  “under rebellion,” [the ten Confederate States].  He hoped to free slaves and undermine the economy and infrastructure of the southern states.  However, his executive order did not free slaves in the four Union slave states of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri.
