Chandragupta Maurya was an emperor who was trained and guided by Kautilya, and older Brahmin. Maurya divided the empire into four regions and each region was divided into provinces. He set a bureaucracies and appointed officials in each region to carry out the emperor's orders. He also set up taxes on crops and used the tax to pay government officials.
