Bartholomew Diaz sailed around the southern tip of Africa and Vasco De Gama sailed farther than Diaz east to India. These explorations helped create trading posts from India to Portugal. Africa gained many trading posts with Portugal and other maritime exploration. Portugal was a trading post empire because on exploration they make tons of outposts that are part of them.

The meaning of "Reason over revelation" is reasoning over religion (life without church). The protestant reformation is an example of the 18th-century European traditions being questioned. Another is how people questioned if the church's practices were accurate and if should they follow their rules. Galileo questioned if the Earth was in the center of the universe and said that the Earth revolved around the Sun. In the 18th century, revelation was made that churches don't have every say so over everything.
