Choose a work in which “overcoming obstacles” is a prominent theme. What obstacles are overcome in the work and how does that speak to us, the readers? Be specific.

Reasonable answer as determined by the teachers

500

Compare and contrast Antigone and Ismene. Does Antigone treat Ismene fairly? Write in complete sentences.

Possible responses: Discuss how Antigone asks Ismene to help bury their brother and she refuses in favor of following the law, consider discussing how Ismene later flops and does want the glory of burying their brother, discuss how Antigone wants to die a holy death but not with her sister, consider discussing that Antigone is engaged to Haemon, how Ismene is a quiet, subservient, and traditional stereotypical example of a woman and Antigone is the opposite in her defiance of the law, etc.

In the text, the boy's basketball coach tells the team to "leave it at the door" -Rashad's beating and hospitalization. Do schools and teachers have a responsibility to address these incidences? Why or Why not?

Reasonable answer that thoughtfully discusses the prompt. E.g., can discuss how the basketball players may need to keep their heads clear to have better chances of being recruited for college basketball, or can discuss how teachers, as potential role models for students, have a responsibility to not ignore instances of injustice, etc.

What is the Lord of the Flies? Explain what it is, why it was named that, and why it was put where it was.

Discuss that the boys of Jack's tribe placed it in Simon's clearing as a sacrifice for the beast after they killed a pig. It is the decapitated head of that pig. It is named the Lord of the Flies because it is an allusion to the devil, or Beelzebub, the devil's right hand man (student does not need to remember the name Beelzebub). This allusion is shown when Simon, the symbol of goodness and an allusion to a messiah, faces off with the pig's head in the clearing.

What strategies do Brutus and Antony use in their speeches at Caesar’s funeral? Which speech was more effective? Why? Be specific in your answer.

They both use ethos, pathos, and logos, otherwise known as rhetorical strategies. While they both use these techniques, Antony ultimately is more persuasive in speaking to the Roman people because he uses the techniques more, the people were already on Caesar's side originally, and he is the last voice in their ear.
