Historical Mascots
This previous "BOZO THE CLOWN" mascot was introduced in 1963 in the Washington D.C. local market. This "food-happy-clown" appeared on TV in 1965 while in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade and became a global icon.
Over time the company shifted toward more adult-focused marketing and away from child-centered mascot advertising. In 2016 a “creepy clown” scare, which made the public clown imagery feel risky and less welcome also helped phase this character out.
You may know him by the friends he hangs out with: Grimace, Hamburglar, Birdie the Early Bird, Mayor McCheese. With his help the fast-food chain has sold well over 300 billion hamburgers.
