Well I would say that they are important for clearing unneeded molecules from the blood. They filter the blood, clean it, etc. 

I would tell them the for ways are filtration (blood to kidney), reabsorption (kidney to blood), secretion (blood to kidney) and excretion (kidney to bladder)
