Remaining in the area will put the victim in danger or leaving the injured person where they were found makes it difficult to access their injuries or other injured people.
When should you move or reposition a victim?
Call 9-1-1
Activate your company's emergency response plan
Get an AED and first aid kit
What things you should do after you determine the scene is safe to provide assistance?
If someone has no obvious injuries but is unresponsive and breathing adequately, position them in this position to help maintain an open air passage to the lungs.
What is the side-lying recovery position?
You must have this before providing first aid care. You may obtain it by introducing yourself and asking if you can help.
What is consent or permission?
Do not leave the person to call EMS until you have checked to see if they are responsive or not and you have stopped any severe bleeding.
What should you do if you are responding to an injured person alone?
You suspect a victim has a head, neck or back injury
They fell to the ground from the roof of a 2 story building
What are times you should not move a victim?
When someone is unable to communicate, you may assume this based on the assumption that the ill or injured person would agree to your help if they could.
What is implied consent?
Tap or squeeze their shoulder and loudly yell to startle them.
How do you quickly check to see if a person is responsive?
Pale skin
Cold Clammy skin
Fast, shallow breathing
confusion
What are symptoms of shock?
Identify hazards
prioritize needs
provide care within skill level
get emergency medical services when needed
remain with injured until more advanced help arrives
What are responsibilities of first aid provider?
If a victim is not breathing, or is only gasping, this type of CPR is needed.
What is compression-only CPR?
Control bleeding
Lay person on ground, do not elevate legs
cover with a blanket above and below body
keep the person calm
