You are asked to write an essay analyzing a novel. You turn in an essay discussing the plot of the novel, the shocking twists and turns, and how it concludes. Your teacher hands the essay back with a failing grade. What did you do wrong?

2) You lack a thesis statement or "guiding light" for the essay, which led you to write a summary.
