You come across an individual who struggles with substance use issues and does not know how/where to go for help or what to do. They feel hopeless. What could you do?

Potential answer: offer them resources (Hope Line - can get individuals to rehab or connected with treatment services; Crisis Peer Supporter, call and speak with Kathy and see if you, she, and the individual can troubleshoot and make a plan).

You are dealing with a situation involving a person in crisis who identifies as transgender. Their ID says their name is Michael, but they identify as Danielle. What do you call them and what do you put in the report?

Calling them by the name they prefer, but putting their legal name in the report. In that moment, put your politics to the side and think about what will create the best outcome for the scenario. Will calling this person Michael help de-escalated this crisis or escalate it?

If someone is experiencing a delusion or hallucination, do you play along with it, deny it completely, or do neither?

Neither. You do NOT want to play along with it (this could affect their future interactions with you and understanding of their illness) and you do not want to deny it (this could escalate things). Rather, you want to say something along the lines of, "I believe that YOU see that... or, I believe that YOU feel that way" or, paraphrasing their statement, "You feel like the government has you under surveillance."

By asking questions! Do you take medication? Do you have a case worker/case manager? Do you have a support person? Do you have any medical conditions? Do you have any mental health conditions? Call the board of DD on-call number to assist in identifying/helping find their way home/to help; looking for clues (i.e emergency contact on phone, bracelet, shoes, etc); speak slowly and in simple terms

400

What are active listening skills and give two examples?

Active listening skills are skills used to show the person you are listening to that you are paying attention... this helps build rapport, understanding of the situation at hand, and give you info on how to resolve. Two examples: emotional labeling (brining emotions into the room), paraphrasing, reflecting (literally saying back the last few words of what they said to you), summarizing what they say, minimal encouragers (words to show you're listening - uh huh, okay, hmmm), effective pauses, "I" statements (i.e I feel frustrated when you yell at me, because it stops me from listening to you), etc.

500

True or False: You can still pink slip even if the person is not suicidal nor homicidal.

TRUE - even if someone is not suicidal or homicidal, if they "would benefit further from treatment", you can use the pink slip (i.e they are not a harm to themselves or others, but they are unstable and would benefit if they went to the hospital to be stabilized).

500

What would be a good strategy if you are responding to a veteran in crisis and you, yourself, are not a veteran?

Potential options: if you have a veteran on duty who can respond, ask for them; call Jim Thornton; call 988 Press 1 with the veteran as support; pink slip if necessary; ask if they have a battle buddy they can call; plan with them to reach out for help/give resources.

500

You are in a crisis. Who can you contact for help?

Potential answer: CopLine, 988, a trusted buddy... if you do not unload your backpack, it will eventually weigh you down. Don't let it get to that point. Call someone as soon as you feel like you need help or that your backpack is filling up. Make time for yourself every day to unload your backpack.
