Define continental drift.

The gradual movement of the continents across the earth's surface through geological time.

100

Name the section of the Earth labelled A

Crust

100

Name three types of volcano

Active Dormant Extinct

100

Name the location and the rock type.

The Burren Co. Clare, Limestone

100

what is a stalagmite ?

Built up of calcium on the floor of a cave.

100

What is the difference between renewable and non renewable energy ?

Renewable can be used over and over again, and non renewable can only be used once.

100

Define Plate Tectonics

Plate tectonics explains how the Earth's surface is made of big, moving puzzle pieces called tectonic plates.

200

What is this supercontinent called ?

Pangea

200

Name the section of the Earth labelled B

Mantle

200

200

Name the location and the rock type.

The Giants Causeway, Co. Antrim, Basalt

200

What is a stalactite ?

Build up of calcium on the roof of a cave

200

Can you name an energy source not harnessed in Ireland ?

Nuclear.

200

What instrument is used to measure an earthquake ?

seismograph

300

Name the Red Continent

Africa

300

Name the section of the Earth labelled C

Outer Core

300

300

Name the three types of rocks

Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic

300

What is a clint ?

Slab of limestone in a limestone pavement

300

Can you name an environmental impact of using renewable energy (2 points of info)

no greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels which reduces air pollution + they are naturally replenished by nature

300

What is overfishing ?

Taking too many fish from the rivers and seas. This doesn't allow them to replenish their stocks.

400

Name the Green Continent

South America

400

Name the section of the Earth labelled D

Inner Core

400

What are benefits of volcanic areas ?

Fertile soil, geothermal energy, tourism etc...

400

What does intrusive igneous rock mean ?

Inside the crust

400

What is a grike ?

The gaps between clints in a limestone pavement.

400

Can you name positive economic impacts of non renewable energy resources ?

Positive: employment is created for the building, operating and maintenance of the power plants. Better infrastructure in your area.

400

2 reasons that cause over fishing.

large nets, supertrawlers, small mesh size, Irelands Membership of the EU, etc...

500

Name the Yellow Continent

Australia

500

What plate is Ireland situated on ?

Eurasian Plate

500

What are negatives of volcanic areas ?

Destruction of nature, harmful gasses, ash clouds, etc...

500

What does extrusive igneous rock mean ?

On the surface of the crust

500

Explain the process of freeze thaw action.

1. water fills the crack in a rock.

2. Over night the temperature drops below freezing point (0 degrees Celsius). The water freezes and expands. This widens the gap.

3. During the day the water melts as the temperature rises above freezing point. This causes the water to seep deeper into the crack.

4. This process is repeated until eventually the rock breaks off and falls down hill. The shattered rock is known as scree.

500

Can you name negative economic impacts of non renewable energy resources ?

Finite energy which means it will eventually run out. The economy will become reliant on the profits made from this industry.

500

What does sustainable fishing look like ?

1. Large mesh sizes to allow underdeveloped fish to not get caught.

2. Quotas.

3. Conservation zones

etc...
