This is a fluid that occupies all the space around us.

Air

100

Tilting wings to increase collisions with air particles creates this lift-enhancing angle.

Angle of attack

Drones use the same flying mechanisms as...

Helicopters

100

Before the invention of the airplane, people traveled by...

Boat, horse carriages and trains.

This bird can fly backwards!

Hummingbird :)

Air pressure decreases when air speed __________, as per Bernoulli’s principle.

Air pressure decreases when air speed increases, as per Bernoulli’s principle.

200

Wing shape that causes faster air flow above than below, creating lift.

Airfoil shape

200

Why do hot air balloons rise?

Because hot air rises, as it has lower density.

200

THe rise of commercial airplanes have contributed to these kinds of pollution.

Air pollution and noise pollution.

200

This property of air can make your ears pop when you are in an airplane taking off or descending.

Air pressure

300

Air is made up of particles that are constantly moving and can be ___________ or expanded.

Air is made up of particles that are constantly moving and can be compressed or expanded.

300

A plane descends when this force exceeds lift.

Weight

The only mammals capable of flight are...

Bats

300

Drones have pros and cons. Name one of each...

Pros: faster deliveries, policing, better camera footage for sports or movies, military applications, and studying wildlife.

Cons: loss of privacy, drone warfare, smuggling of illegal goods over borders, aviation interferences, and impact of natural ecosystems and wildlife.

The first powered airplane was invented by...

The Wright brothers. It lasted 59 seconds in the air!

400

This elements takes up 78% of the air we breathe.

Nitrogen

Newton’s law stating "an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon."

Newton's first law of motion

400

Parachutes, "flying" squirrels and gliders are not considered things that fly, because for something to actually fly, it has to...

Be able to take off from the ground on its own.

400

Name two negative effects of commercial flights on society.

Pollution, impact on bird life, and plane crashes lead to tragic loss of life.

400

How do hot air balloons control the direction in which they move?

They can't, but they can float up or down and use the air's currents (wind) to turn a little in different directions.

500

The difference between this property (measured in kg), and weight is gravity's influence.

Mass

500

If thrust equals drag and lift equals weight, a plane will ______________.

If thrust equals drag and lift equals weight, a plane will maintain it's speed/altitude.

500

Helicopter tail rotors prevent this unwanted Newton’s Third Law effect.

Spinning uncontrollably

500

Name two positive effects of commercial flights on society.

Flight has revolutionized the way humans travel. Whether it’s travelling for business or pleasure, military or commerce, airplanes have essentially made the world more accessible to people. Before airplanes, a trip across the ocean from Europe to North America would have taken weeks by ship, a trip that now only takes a few hours. Countries are able to trade goods on a whole new scale, people can vacation in far away places they never would have seen without airplanes, food and water can be sent to disaster relief efforts very quickly, and the structure of militaries around the world has been completely overhauled.

500

Why are helicopters more useful than airplanes sometimes?

Because they can take off from small spaces and don't need a long runway, they can hover in place and stay somewhat still in the air. These properties make them ideal for rescues, delivery of emergency resources and surveillance.
