Testing, Running the Missions Over and Over.  Recording the data to see change.

Describe the problem in 2 sentences or less

Students with severe autism have speech and developmental delays which makes it difficult for them to join after school clubs such as Lego Leagues.

If there were no awards in FLL, would you still participate?

Yes, FLL is not about awards.  We are learning skills, having fun together, learning to work as a team, ..... Awards are the icing on the cake

Of all the things your team accomplished, what are you most proud of?

Mighty Oaks Team, Mentoring, Learning to do public speaking, Pars Presentation, Regional Competition, Overcoming the robot game challenges at regionals, learning new skill, ....

How did you make sure everyone on your team developed their building and coding skills?

Everyone built a mission model this season.  Everyone contributed to ideas for the jigs and attachments.  We built and tried different designs over the summer.  Everyone coded 1 mission.  We divided the work across the team.  We printed programs everyone could use for programming.

How much does your solution cost?

To start a team (not the solution) is around $400.  The guide itself was free to create in Canva.  It costs around $10 to print one.  It is free to share the QR Code version.  Visual tools we used in our team were under $200.

More runs for consistency, Try one more mission, More sharing of the guide, Additional Fun activity, Additional activity for teamwork, Practice Presentations More, ....

What are examples of how we used innovation this season?

attachments, gyro sensor, changing to stations for our MO practices, calibrations, visual tool ideas for practices, fun ideas for teaching STEAM (catapults, wiggle bots, ...), solving missions differently, ...

How did your robot design change over the season?

Centered the motor, added the anchor, changed from panels to frames (smaller), changed the sensors this season to be the right height and placement with wheels, added support to wheels, added a bar underneath for managing wires, changes the light show, changed the boat to the dump truck bed, ....

Professionals, End Users (Mighty Oaks), CDC, Videos, National Autism Society, Experiences, ....

What's the most important thing to know about your team?

Fun & Heart (we have fun and do fun outings to supplement what we learn with robots and the project.  we like to do things that make an impact- project, FMSC, OCC, ...).

We are a diverse team (age, races, skills, genders)

We started from a school that closed and stuck together.

What are some new skills we discovered this season (Discovery)

Canva, Public Speaking, Coding, Gyro Sensor, Creativity in Skit, Passive Attachments, Building/Engineering, How to Answer Questions on Spot (good for interviewing), autism awareness, ....

How did your team decide what to do each time you met?

Start with goals, core value applications, core value activities.  Do half with the project and half with the robot game.  Once the project was done and game programmed, switched to presentations and robot game runs.  End with talking about the day or what is next.

Did you make changes to mission strategy after working on them? 

We found sound mixer was easier than expected and added it to our missions to try.  We changed the light show pathway.  We had to add a line stop for the theater to get to right distance for the attachment.  We decided to not use the levers for them all as there were easier ways to do them (immersive wall- platform, push the rolling camera, push the lights, push the dragon, ...).

How did your coach help you be successful?

Encourages us.  Gives us corrections and ideas for improvement.  Showed up every practice to mentor us.  Makes sure we do a balance of activities.  Makes sure we understand the rules.  Teaches us skills (programming, public speaking tips, project management, ...).  Helps keep us on task.  Makes sure we have the supplies we need.

Did you have any design ideas that did not work?

Not all the designs we tried worked the best (some did not drive as straight or turn well).  The light show fork lift did not end up working.  The boat delivery was too difficult.  We struggled with adding the statue to the end of our second run. ...

Did you make any changes or improvements after sharing your solution, and, if so, what did you change?

Added more visual tools, added more adaptations (decrease difficulty of our activities we tried), added more professionals (speech), tip to do the stations, tip to remove the distractions, added silent applause idea to festivals, updated to a fancier magazine style.

What is something surprising you learned this season?

How to deal with conflicts.  How to apologize to friends.  Public speaking.  How to answer question.  Canva.  Project Management.  Communication as a team.  Creativity.
