Name a state of matter.

What is: solid, liquid, gas, plasma, time crystal...

100
A rectangular prism is 1 cm x 3 cm x 5 cm. What is its volume?

15 cm3 - 1 times 3 times 5.

100

This is the name for the upwards force on an object from a fluid it is floating in.

What is buoyancy?

100

This is a large object designed to add volume to a bridge to make it float.

What is a pontoon?

100

This is Lewis's middle name.

What is David?

200

Name an example of a property of matter.

Shiny, dense, hard, soft, conducts electricity, fuzzy, etc.

200

A graduated cylinder reads 10 mL. After putting a marble into it, it reads 16 mL. What is the volume of the marble?

6 mL.

16 mL - 10 mL = 6 mL (by displacement)

200

This is the density of water (including units!)

What is 1 g/cm3?

200

This is the definition of mass.

What is the amount of matter inside an object?

200

This is the name of our new Head of School.

What is Pete Hodge?

300

This property of matter is calculated using mass / volume.

What is density?

300

An object has a mass of 30 g and a volume of 6 cm3. What is its density?

5 g/cm3. Density = mass / volume, so 30 / 6 .

300

This is what is meant by "displacement."

When an object is submerged in a liquid (like water) and its level rises or comes out of its container.
300

This is the word we invented for "suspension," the act of not floating or sinking.

What is "flinking"?

300

This is the name of the bridge we studied.

What is the SR 520 bridge or the Evergreen Point Bridge?

400

This state of matter has fixed volume, but no fixed shape.

What is a liquid?

400

An object is put into 100 mL of water, and afterwards the water level is 115 mL. It has a mass of 30 g. What is its density, and will it float in water?

2 g/cm3. It will not float, because it is more dense than the density of water (1 g/cm3)

400

This is a full statement of Archimedes' Principle.

The buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the liquid it displaces. If the liquid displaced is equal to its weight, it floats. If it is less, it sinks.

400

This is the difference between mass and weight.

Mass is always the same - it is the amount of matter inside an object. Measured in grams.

Weight can change - it is the force of gravity on an object. Measured in Newtons.

400

This is the US state where Lewis was born.

What is Massachusetts?

500

List the fourth state of matter, which is the most common state of matter in the universe.

What is plasma?

500

An object has a mass of 67 g. What is the smallest volume it could have and still be able to float in water? Explain why.

67.1 mL or 67.1 cm3. At 67 mL, the density would be 1 g/cm3 and it would flink instead of float.

500

Use Archimedes' Principle to explain how a bridge made of concrete can float.

The bridge is designed to displace water that is a greater weight than the bridge, keeping it floating! This is typically done using large pontoons that are full of air, and therefore have enough volume to be less dense than the water.

500

This is the name for the little "smiley face" at the top of water in a graduated cylinder.

What is a meniscus?

500
This is the year MFS was founded.

What is 1951?
