Why is a Rock Ritual performed? How does it work?

A Rock Ritual is a closure ritual to say goodbye to a class member leaving. The student leaving picks out a rock. As the rock is passed to each class member, he shares a memory about the student who is leaving. That student takes the rock with him when he goes.
