What are some of the health impacts that may occur?

Diet and nutrition play a major role in chronic disease. Chronic illnesses are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States, with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer being the most common.

What are greenhouse gas emissions? How do we reduce it?

A gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation, such as carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons.

Composting organic waste helps reduce this type of pollution, which can negatively impact human health.

What is Food Advocacy?

Food advocacy refers to the work done by activists, community members, stakeholders, and others to influence food systems change including the dismantling of barriers to food access.

What are cultural implications to food access? What may they include?

  • Food deserts that disproportionately impact communities of color and low income communities

  • Lack of access to culturally significant foods

How may this affect those in lower income communities?

Among low-income and food-insecure communities, disproportionate access to:

- Affordable

- Healthy foods

Which contributes to poor nutrition and perpetuates health disparities, leading to higher rates of obesity and other chronic ailments.

What is urban decay? How can it be reduced?

Planting trees in cities can significantly reduce urban decay, where vacant lots are abandoned or have abandoned houses, this was more prominate in the 1960s and 70s.

This method involves preparing and storing food for future use, a skill the urban homesteader is improving.

Canning Foods.

What is making seed bombs?

This act involves using clay, soil, and seeds to help neglected land flourish.

Why is so important to have trees? What can happen do to a lack of?

Research shows that temperatures in redlined areas are approximately 2.6 degrees Celsius warmer due to the lack of these.

How can we avoid landfill overuse?

By creating pounds of compost, urban farms helps mitigate this environmental issue associated with organic waste.

What is vertical gardening?

Using vertical space to grow plants, such as cantaloupe, helps save ground space in this type of garden.

Who is Hattie Carthan?

In the 1960s and 70s, this woman led grassroots efforts to plant 1,500 trees in Bed-Stuy.

How can composting help heath wise?

Composting supports urban farming and green spaces, which can improve air quality and provide residents with access to fresh, locally grown produce. This can enhance the overall well-being of urban populations.

What is nutrient cycling?

This term refers to the ecological benefit of reducing waste and recycling nutrients back into the soil through composting.

What is used for making seed bombs?

This act involves using clay, soil, and seeds to help neglected land flourish.

What is redlining? What is radical gardening?

This practice was a racially discriminatory method where mortgage lenders denied services to certain neighborhoods.

This long history of transforming communities through gardening is often referred to as this.

What is dehydrating? How may it help health wise?

The urban homesteader preserves food through various methods, including freezing, canning, and this method of removing moisture.

By using these methods, she is able to make her food last longer and keep ensuring a healthy eating supply.

How may the industrial or “conventional” way of producing food causes large-scale environmental degradation.

  • Air emissions from livestock operations make up 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Conventional crop production degrades soil health and causes soil erosion.

  • The high content of nitrogen and other nutrients in manure runoff leads to dead zones in downstream waterways.

What would be the ideal seed mix for seed bombs?

- Drought Tolerant

- Perennials

- Wild Flowers
