Whether or not you think illegal immigration (or the influx of undocumented workers) is a problem, how is illegal immigration connected to the food we eat?
Illegal immigrants make up a large portion of the meatpacking industry workforce. It is them who prepare, package, and even distribute our food. Since the American food industry was a big detriment to the farmers down in Mexico, many of the workers have illegally migrated up here to work in our factory farms.

The mother says, “Sometimes it feels like industry was more protected than my son.” What do you think she meant by that?
The mother is saying that the industry has so much protection around them, and so many people saying that " We did not cause your sons's death". Also, the industry has so much money, that they hire attorneys, which protect them from a lawsuit, whereas Kevin died from the factory being careless.

Subsidies make certain foods cheaper than they would be otherwise. Without subsidies, how will this affect the food industry, and the low-income families?
Let’s just pretend subsidies did not exist for a minute. Food companies would have to find other ways to make good profits. If every food company was expensive, so much so low-income families had difficult times purchasing food from the supermarket, the food companies would lose profit. Therefore, the companies would have to lower costs to an affordable price. However, if companies did not lower prices, and low-income families were not able to afford wholesome food, fast food becomes the next option. When this happens, the families health goes downhill and their lives are shortened.

Farmer Joel Salatin in the film says, “We’re willing to subsidize the food system to create the mystique of cheap food when actually it’s very expensive food.” What might he mean by that?
He means either one of two things. One is that it doesn't cost much to produce the food, but the company that produces the food raises the prices, so when the consumer buys them, it is very expensive. The less likely one of the two, is that the food was very expensive to produce, but the selling price is cheap.

Who is responsible for keeping our food safe?
The industries are. They grow/raise the food, package it, and ship it. The industry should keep checking if the food is safe to eat, and if anytime during the process, something happens to the food, that could make someone sick/die, they should recall the product.

In the film, the mother, Maria Andrea Gonzalez, says, “We’re really tight from either paying for his [Alfredo Orozco’s] medicine to be healthy or buying vegetables to be healthy.” Which should she choose if she cannot afford both?
She should invest her money into the healthy fruits and vegetables. This is because, her husband only requires the medicine because of all the junk she has been feeding him. The vegetables will slowly help his health. And also, if she chose the medicine, she would be required to buy the cheaper fast food, and laster need to buy the medicine for one of her daughters, due to unhealthy eating.
300
If the cost of the healthy food was reduced to lower than the junk, would people start to buy more of it? Explain.
Yes, as the main reason people are only getting junk food as a cheaper alternative to healthy food, is that they cannot possibly afford healthy food, and the other costs of life.

With cheap food, it seems our society pays at both ends—at the production end with subsidy tax dollars, and at the consumption end with poorer health and lower productivity. Who benefits from cheap, fast food?
The only person that really benefits form fast-food, is the fast-food company. They are making a profit. But the consumers of fast food are dealing with the consequence of bad health. Since it is considered cheap, the consumers will keep buying it, resulting in more and more profit for the company.

Who is responsible for Kevin's death?
The meat company should be held completely responsible. Cows were meant to roam and eat grass. That is what they are designed for. But when you give them corn is ruins their stomach and makes the rate of E-Coli jump to record highs. You don’t make a dog eat bird seed. In the video they said if you put a cows in a grass pasture it will shed most of its E-coli. And it is really cheaper to put them in grass because they do the mowing and the fertilizing, all by themselves. All you would have to do is let them be free. In feedlots cattle are under tons of stress and this makes them susceptible to getting diseases like E-Coli.

Is healthy eating a right, a responsibility, or a privilege?
Eating healthy is a combination of all of the above. Because you can't let your diet get to out of hand. But at the same time, when someone takes it away, and makes you a criminal for drinking a over sized drink, it then becomes a right. It is also a privilege because not everybody in the world has the ability to eat healthy, because they are in a third world country, they can't afford it, or whatever their situation might be.

In the film, we see that Stonyfield Yogurt is now owned by Groupe Danone, Tom’s of Maine by Colgate, Kashi by Kellogg, and Burt’s Bees by Clorox, which are all large corporations. What kinds of consumers are these products are geared for? How will those consumers react to learning that the products are actually made by big corporations?
The products produced are geared towards consumers who are probably not wanting to contribute to large corporations. They most likely respond how the man who owned Stonyfield Yogurt said his friends reacted when he said he was going into big business. They would most likely stop buying the products and try to look for smaller producers that have not been bought by large corporations .They would also claim that the companies that allow themselves to be bought by larger corporations are immoral for doing so.
