What is a food chain?

A food chain shows the flow of energy from one organism to another from beginning to end.

100

What is a food web?

Multiple food chains that overlap and interact in one ecosystem.

100

What is an ecosystem?

A natural environment in which abiotic and biotic things interact.

100

What are the 3 primary diet types animals have?

Carnivore, Herbivore, and Omnivore.

100

Why do humans (at the top of the food chain) need to consume more than grasshoppers (at the bottom of the food chain)?

When an animal eats, it only gets 10% of the food's energy. So the farther something is away from the producers, the less energy it has.

200

What is the initial energy source for all food chains?

Sun

200

No matter what which organism can effect anything of the food web?

Decomposers.

200

What is the difference between an abiotic and a biotic factor in an enviornment.

An abiotic factor is nonliving while a biotic factor is living.

200

What are the types of food that each diet eats?

Carnivore: meat

Herbivore: Plants

Omnivore: Meat and plants

200

What is the difference in a scavenger versus a decomposer?

A scavenger is a consumer who eats the dead organisms or "leftovers" from other animals like a vulture or hyenas. A decomposer breaks down dead organisms for nutrients.

scavengers consume, decomposers break down.

300

Which organism is an example of a producer in an ecosystem?

Any type of plant.

300

Identify two organisms competing for the same food source.

Multiple answers, depends on student response.

300

Give 3 examples of biotic and abiotic factors that would be in a garden ecosystem.

Depends on student answer. Some examples may be:

Biotic: Worms, plants, butterflies, squirrels, snakes, etc.

Abiotic: Dirt, water, sunlight, oxygen/carbon dioxide, etc.

300

A raccoon eats the following foods: fruits, nuts, insects, small animals, and human garbage.

What is their diet type?

Omnivore

300

What are the types of decomposers?

FBI

Fungi

Bactria

Insects

400

What do the arrows in a food chain diagram represent?

The transfer of energy from one organism to another.

400

How many primary consumers are there in this food web?

There are 5: Elk, mouse, grasshopper, rhino, and giraffe.

400

What factors are intercating?

An eagle flies high in the air while watching deer prance.

An eagle (biotic) is flying in the air (abiotic)

400

What diet did this organism have? How do you know?

Herbivore because the teeth are flat for grinding.

400

What is the difference between a complete and incomplete metamorphosis?

A complete is when an organism changes completely like a butterfly. An incomplete metamorphosis is when an organism is born looking like a smaller version of its grownup self. They do not under go a major change, like a dog for example.

500

In the food chain:

Grass → Rabbit → Fox

What role does the rabbit play?

Primary Consumer

500

If the grasshopper population died out which other organisms would directly be effected and how?

The grass population would increase because it is being consumed less.

The populations of the bird and monkey will decrease because they have lost their food source.

500

Describe at least two interactions happening in this pond ecosystem. Describe which factors are biotic and abiotic as well as HOW they are interacting.

Answers may vary depending on students.

Possible examples: Sun (abiotic) gives light for the plant (biotic) to with photosynthesis. The frog (biotic) eats the flies (biotic) for nutrients.

500

What diet did this organism have? How do you know?

Omnivore because its front teeth are sharp for biting and tearing while its back teeth are flat for grinding.

500

Name every level of the ecosystem pyramid.

In order from top to bottom:

Organism

Population

Community

Ecosystem
