100

A type of organism that can break down just about any type of organic matter and is too small to see without tools

What is Bacteria?

100

The food of almost any type of organism can be traced to –

The Sun

200

Actions by one thing that have an effect on a different or separate thing

What is Interaction?

200

Matter moves directly from plants to animals when plants are eaten by animals. Matter also moves from plants to animals indirectly through -

Air

300

A type of organism that can break down just about any type of organic matter and can be large, such as a mushroom, or small, such as tiny pieces of mold

What is a fungus?

300

How does the decomposition of a fallen tree contribute to the health of a forest?

As the tree decays, nutrients cycle to other organisms.

400

The space, conditions, and all the living and nonliving things around an organism

What is an environment?

400

What are decomposers? How do they “recycle” matter?

Decomposers are bacteria and fungi that break down the matter of dead plants and animals. They return some of their nutrients to the soil. They recycle matter by putting these nutrients into the soil where plants grow. Consumers eat these plants and use that energy to fuel their bodies. This cycle is always occurring and matter is always being recycled.

500

A very small life-form, especially a bacterium

What is a microbe?

500

The main requirement for a diverse ecosystem is that -

there are enough resources available to support many different types of organisms.

500

Food webs model the relationships between organisms within an ecosystem. Every organism within a food web has a specific role. Some make their own food, some eat other organisms, and some, such as the dung beetle, eat the waste of other organisms

Write a scientific explanation describing the relationship between the grass and the dung beetle.

The grass uses the Sun’s energy to live and grow. It passes this energy on when it is eaten by another organism. When organisms eat the ones that eat the grass, the energy is passed to them. The energy is finally passed to the dung beetle as it breaks down the waste released by these organisms.
