100

When two equal forces act in opposite directions the result is

Balanced force

100

A push or a pull that can cause the motion of an object to change.

Force

100

The process of moving or changing position.

Motion

100

Which part of your bicycle helps give friction between it and the road, so it does not just slide on the pavement?

the tires

100

Sierra goes outside to push her little sister on the swing. She knows when to push on the seat of the swing because she can observe __________.

the pattern of how long it takes for the swing to go forward and then back again

200

When one force is stronger than the other the result is

Unbalanced force

200

A force that attracts objects toward the earth. "What goes up, must come down!"

Gravity

200

If you drop a ball is it at rest or in motion?

The ball is in motion. The forces acting on the ball are unbalanced (Gravity is pulling it down).

200

Friction happens when

two or more objects move against each other.

200

Is a turtle sitting on a log a description of a pattern of motion? Why or why not?

No, there is no movement (motion) so there can be no pattern.

300

Is a student sitting in a chair an example of balanced or unbalanced forces?

Balanced forces. Gravity is pulling the student down and the chair is pushing the student up with equal force, resulting in no motion.

300

_______ is the force that acts to slow an object down.

Friction

300

Explain the relationship between string length and motion for pendulums.

The longer the string length, the slower a pendulum swings. The shorter the string length, the faster a pendulum swings.

300

Why does a figure skater put on a pair of ice-skates with blades on the bottom instead of a pair of tennis shoes in order to skate on the ice?

to reduce friction between her foot and the ice

300

Is the Earth traveling around the sun a description of a fast or slow pattern of motion?

Slow-365 days to complete one cycle of the pattern

400

Balanced forces are _____ in size but opposite in direction.

equal

400

_______ is the amount of force that is applied to an object.

Strength

400

What are some examples of very fast motions? What about extremely slow motions?

Fast motion could include the flapping of a bee's wings, a cheetah running, an airplane flying or a speaker vibrating. Some really slow motions could be a plant growing, a glacier sliding or a snail moving. No matter how slow motion is, it's still motion!

400

True or False: Friction can cause heat.

True

400

When the same motion repeats itself over and over, it  creates a ___________.

pattern

500

How do balanced and unbalanced forces cause the egg to drop into the water?

When the egg is sitting on top of the toilet paper tube, the forces acting upon it are balanced. The tube is pushing it up and gravity is pulling it down. When the tube is quickly removed, the only force acting on the egg is gravity, which causes its motion downward into the cup of water.

500

Force has two important properties:

strength and direction

500

Who created these laws of motion:

  1. An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
  2. The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied.
  3. Whenever one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite on the first.

500

A student pushes a book across a tile floor and then he pushes the same book across a carpeted floor. The book slides more easily across the tile than on the carpet, why?

The book experiences less friction on the tile.

500

In order for a pattern of motion to occur, an object's _________ must be constantly changing.

position
