When sand paper slides down a slide does it cause...

 high friction or low friction?

High Friction

Which of the items will a magnet attract....

Paperclip

Popsicle stick

Penny

Paperclip

Why is a board bridge the least sturdy bridge of all?

There is nothing pushing or pulling it, so the board sags with too much weight.

100

Which slidder was faster?

Styrofoam or Cardboard?

Cardboard

THROW is a.... push or pull?

Push

200

Name a material what would cause HIGH friction going down a slide.

Answers will vary...

Sandpaper

Wood

What materials do magnets attract?

Iron and Steel

200

Explain how a pillar bridge has pushes or pulls.

The pillars of the bridge pushes the bridge up.

Imagine a student sliding down a slide. If the friction force is stronger than the force of gravity, what will happen?

The student will stop sliding.

300

STOMP is a.... push or pull?

Push

How could you change friction to slide down a slide faster?

You could make the slide more slippery, you could wear slippery clothes, or you could ride on a slippery material. All of those things would make less friction force, so the pull of gravity would bring you down the slide faster.

300

Name 3 items that magnets DO NOT attract.

Paper

Wood

Copper

300

Explain how an arch bridge has pushes or pulls.

The arch under the bridge pushes the bridge up.

300

Why is it hard for students to win a tug-o-war contest against a group of teachers?

Teachers can cause a lot of friction because of their strength and size.

400

DRAG is a.... push or pull?

PULL

400

Why does a slidder with 5 pennies slide faster than a slidder with 1 penny?

The slidder with 5 pennies has more weight than the slidder with 1 penny.

The more weight, the more pull gravity has over the item which pulls the slidder down faster.

400

Explain how magnets can repel and attract.

Magnets have two ends. A positive and a negative end. When they are opposite, they attract. When they are the same, they repel.

400

Explain how a suspension bridge pushes or pulls.

The suspension cables pull the bridge up.

400

Name the four forces of motion we learned about in our unit.

Push

Pull

Attract

Repel

500

Name two examples of a push and two examples of a pull

Answers will vary

500

How does high friction and low friction affect gravity?

When something has high friction, gravity has a harder time pulling on the item.

When something has low friction, gravity can pull on the item easily.

500

Are Paper Clips Magnets? Explain

Paper clips are not magnets, but they can become magnetized by coming in contact with magnets.

The paper clips that are touching magnets can pick up things made of iron.

It will stay magnetized for a short time after the magnet is removed.

Why was a suspension bridge the only option for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco? .Explain why the other bridges wouldn't work.

Board bridge- no support, and too far of a gap

Pillar bridge- boats wouldn't be able to pass underneath and water is too deep

Arch bridge- too big of a gap

Suspension was the best option because of the deep waters, the boats that need to pass underneath, and the large gap between the two towns.

In the watermelon experiment, why did the last rubber band cause the watermelon to burst?

Before the last rubber band, the force of the rubber bands were equal to or less than the force of the rind pushing back. The last rubber band was special because adding it made the force of the rubber bands stronger than the force of the rind.
