Explain the 3/5 Compromise

The 3/5 compromise was reached because the Southern states fought to have enslaved people count as part of their population.  They wanted a larger population so they would gain more representation in the House of Representatives. The northern states disagreed and thought they should not count since the southern states treated them as property.  They reached a compromise that 3/5 of the enslaved people would count in the population.
