100

The amount of matter an object contains.

What is mass?

100

You do this to tell if something is a solution.

Evaporate the liquid.   If something is left behind it was dissolved in the water.

100

A material made by combining two or more substances, where each substance keeps its own properties.

What is a mixture?

100

The substances that are present before a chemical reaction takes place.

What are reactants?

100

This tool is used to measure the mass of an object.

What is a balance?

200

If 500 grams of ingredients are placed in a bowl, the mixture will have this mass.

What is 500 grams?
200

What happens to a solution if you leave it sit for a day in the sun?

Part of the water evaporates and the solution gets more concentrated.

200

A mixture in which one substance dissolves evenly into another substance.

What is a solution?

200

The new substances formed during a chemical reaction.

What are products?

200

When salt disappears into water, it has not vanished. It has done this.

What is dissolved?

300

If you mix 10 grams of baking soda and 60 grams of vinegar in an open cup what would the mass (approximately) be and why?

The mass would be a bit less than 70 grams because the chemical reaction made gas, which escaped, so it weighs less.

300

You mix up some fruit punch drink mix with water. It tastes perfect. Then you boil it on the stove for several minutes.  Besides being hot, what has changed about the taste of your fruit punch and why?

It now tastes sweeter, more concentrated, has a stronger flavor because some of the water evaporated.  None of the fruit punch drink mix evaporated.  It's the same amount of drink mix, but with less water.

300

The substance that gets dissolved in a solution.

What is a solute?

300

A solid that forms when two liquids are mixed during a chemical reaction.

What is a precipitate?

300

A student mixes sand and water. This method can be used to separate the sand from the water.

What is filtration?

400

If you mix 10 grams of baking soda and 60 grams of vinegar in a closed cup what would the mass (approximately) be and why?

The mass would be 70 grams because the gas would be contained in the closed container.
400

You mix water and hot chocolate mix. Then you leave it boiling on the stove for awhile.  What happens to the taste of the hot chocolate when if finally cools down enough for you to taste it?  Why?

It is more concentrated / has a stronger hot chocolate flavor.  This is because the amount of the hot chocolate powder is still the same, but the amount of water is decreased.  Some of it evaporated.  So now the solution tastes much stronger.

400

The substance that does the dissolving in a solution.

What is a solvent?

400

When baking soda and vinegar are mixed, bubbles form because a new substance is produced. This is evidence of this type of change.

What is a chemical reaction?

400

The total mass of matter stays the same before and after mixing substances or during a chemical reaction in a closed system (a sealed bag or closed cup).  True or false?

True

500
You're making two cups of solutions.  One has 40mL of water and 10 spoons of citric acid.  The other has 40mL of water and 15 spoons of citric acid.  You mix the solutions.  You filter it.  Then you pour 30 mL of solution one into a cup and 30 mL of solution 2 into a cup and put them on a scale.  What does the scale look like and why?

It looks balanced because the two cups have the same amount of a filtered solution.

500

A mixture of gravel, sand, and water can be separated because the substances keep these.

What are "their original properties?"

500

The process of separating a dissolved solid from a liquid by allowing the liquid to disappear.

What is evaporation?

500

These are four signs that a chemical reaction may have occurred.

What are color change, gas production (bubbles), temperature change, and formation of a precipitate?

500

Sugar water looks the same throughout because it is this type of mixture.

What is a solution?
