Mobile Houston, Empower Families, Transform Generations

What are the 3 strategies of The Riverside Project?

Amber Knowles, Executive Director

cell: 713-202-3109

riversideproject.org

The Riverside Project is a collaborative network of agencies, congregations, nonprofits, school districts, and passionate individuals working together to transform the foster care system in Houston.

Foster care is not an isolated problem. The various systemic issues affecting children and families are interconnected (issues such as poverty, homelessness, addiction, incarceration, human trafficking, etc.). Thus, to create real, lasting change, we must address these issues from all sides. When we work together – each with our own unique focus, skills, and expertise – we can begin to build a better future for every family in our community.

Fort Bend Family Promise

Whose mission is to meet the needs of homeless families while empowering them to attain self-sufficiency?

www.fortbendfamilypromise.org

The problem is so well-hidden that people often are shocked to learn about the growing number of homeless families in Fort Bend County. Based on a University of Texas study, there are between 6,000 and 9,000 homeless in Fort Bend in any given year, and nearly half are children seeking shelter with their families.

Housing, healthcare and other costs are soaring, and many low income families are just a paycheck away from losing their homes. Common causes of episodic homelessness are job loss, illness, injury, foreclosure, divorce and natural disaster.

Our Housing Navigator helps each family develop an individualized plan to attain safe, affordable housing and develop the confidence and skills they need to achieve long-term independence.

What is the percentage of male foster care alumni incarcerated by the age of 19?

Information provided by Angel Reach (angelreach.org)

Because of numerous distressing reasons, many children and youth in our community live away from their natural birth parents, in foster care and kinship homes.  These young people are at extreme risk of life-long poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, early death, and unproductive or under-productive lives.

  • Thirty percent of male foster care alumni are incarcerated by 19 years of age.
  • Nearly half of all girls who lived in foster care are pregnant by age 19, many producing children who join the cycle of abuse and neglect.

Angel Reach is dedicated to helping these at-risk children
and youth transition to better lives.

Community Youth Outreach Resource Center (CYO) is a collaborative initiative designed to meet the needs of youth between the ages of 16-24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Montgomery County, Texas.

718 children were considered homeless in Conroe School district in 2018

The goal is to engage, empower and support these youth in gaining the skills and experience needed to become self-sufficient adults.  The CYO is a Resource Center where the youth can come to receive basic-needs services, plan their path to self-sufficiency with the help of qualified Social Workers (called Youth Coaches), and be connected with the support services provided by Angel Reach.
