So we don’t make these mistakes, and instead discern between true and false ideas.
Who is the truth?
Jesus, his word.
In order to have a deck, what must a claim not do?
Break one of the three careful thinking rules
What questions do we need to ask ourselves before we accept a claim as true? And how do we investigate each question (1-3)?
1. Do we need a knowledge bridge? - Check if the statement is objective/subjective
2. Do we have a deck? - See if the claim breaks the rules of logic
3. Is the bridge connected to land? - See if claim has good support/avoids careful thinking mistakes
4. Is it sturdy?
What are the three rules of logic? Explain them.
The Law of Identity - Something is what it is and is not something else
The Law of Non-Contradiction - A claim cannot be both true and false at the same time and in the same way
The Law of Excluded Middle - A claim must be either true or false
What are the six careful thinking mistakes?( 5 out of 6)
1. A persons character doesn’t make his claim true or false
2. Don’t forget about the claim in question
3. Feelings are not support
4. Popularity does not equal truth
5.experts can be wrong

If you don’t feel close to God, does it mean he’s not there?
No, The fact that we don’t feel close to Him does not change the fact that He is very close to us.
I am a man of faith. Do we know the identity of the claim? If yes, how do we know? If no, what do we need to do?
We do not know the identity of this claim, we have to ask questions about which definition of faith they are using.
What is the difference between an objective statement and a subjective statement?
Objective statements are either true or false for everyone. They are not informed by bias or personal opinion.
Subjective statements describe information based on personal opinion and/or personal interpretation
For which rule of logic should we clarify the definition of a word? Explain why we should clarify the definition of words.
The Law of Identity. A word’s definition is what it is and it is not something else. We need to clarify the definition of a word to avoid misunderstanding. We need to know a claim’s identity before we find it to be true or false.
Q: “Isaac, your mom and I are going to limit your screen time to one hour per day. Playing three hours of video games each day will harm your brain development. Just look at Davis across the street. He’s 32. He doesn’t have a job. And he does nothing but sit in his parents’ basement all day and play video games. You don’t want to end up like him. Do you?”
What is the claim? Do we need a knowledge bridge? Does the bridge have a deck? Is the deck of the bridge connected to land?
Claim: Playing three hours of video games each day will harm your brain development
Knowledge bridge: Yes
Deck: Yes
Connected to land: No
How does Paul view the preaching made by the philippians vs the preaching made by the Galatians? How does it relate to one of the careful thinking mistakes?
What’s the difference—celebration in Philippians and cursing in Galatians? The difference is that there is no evidence in Philippians that the hypocritical preachers were saying false things when they preached the gospel. They preached the true gospel, while the preachers in Galatians were distorting the gospel. Even though the Philippians preachers were preaching from envy and rivalry, Paul still rejoiced knowing the truth of the gospel was being preached correctly. Despite the character of the rival preachers in Philippians, they were preaching gospel truth. A persons character doesn’t make his claim true or false.
My favorite color is blue. Is this claim objective or subjective?
Subjective
Does this statement have a knowledge bridge? Explain why.
Gore and violence in games and movies are not good for the psychological well-being of the spectators.
Yes, because it is an objective statement. You can support this claim to be either true or false for everyone.
What is the alternate definition of faith? What is the standard definition?

Standard definition- Believing because of support
What are the two things we should keep in mind before believing what an expert says?
We should evaluate whether that person is an expert in the area relating to her claim
We also need to pay attention to what other experts says
Memorize Colossians 2:6-8
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:6-8
What is Exodus 20:8-11 about? (Hint: one of God’s laws)
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Capital punishment is when a criminal is put to death for his or her crime. Some people argue that capital punishment is not a fair penalty. However, there is nothing unjust with capital punishment when someone commits murder. Communities are perfectly justified when they put to death someone who has killed another person.
Is there a knowledge bridge, why? Is there a deck, why? Is the bridge connected to land, why?
Yes, this is an objective statement.
Yes, this claim does not break the three rules of logic.
No, this person has not provided any evidence to support his claim that there is nothing wrong with capital punishment when someone commits murder.
Use the baseball examples used in class to explain all the three rules of logic.
The Law of Identity- A pitcher is a pitcher, the crowd is the crowd, an umpire is an umpire… etc
The Law of Non-Contradiction- An umpire cannot yell both “you’re out” and “safe” at the same time
The Law of Excluded Middle- An umpire can yell either “you’re out” or “safe”
In Matthew 12:9-14, how were the Pharisees’s claim an example of one of the careful thinking mistakes?
Experts can be wrong: These religious experts were versed in the Torah and knew God’s law front to back, but they also added their own laws, defying God’s law. They accused Jesus of breaking the(ir) law, when in fact, they broke God’s law by adding to it.
What does Hebrew 4:14-16 say in general terms. Connected to the verse, Is Jesus fully human or fully God? Or both? Why?
Hebrew 4:14-16 says we have Jesus who is able to sympathize with our weaknesses, but he never sinned despite facing the same temptations that we have faced. Therefore we should turn to him and receive mercy and find grace in times of need. Jesus is both, because he was in human form and faced temptations that we have faced. Yet he is also God because he is omnipotent and never sinned despite temptations.
