The falling action begins with Max being saved from Killer Kane. In the story, Max and Kevin graduate 8th grade, Freak the Mighty is one year old, Kevin has a seizure on his birthday and is hospitalized, all during the falling action. The resolution begins when Freak and Max are talking for the last time in the hospital. The resolution includes the passing of Kevin, Max's reaction, and coping with the death of his friend. Most importantly, the resolution incudes Max writing the story of Freak the Mighty in the empty book that Kevin gave him.

He also provides Max with a way to cope with his loss before he dies by encouraging him to write the story of their adventures. Kevin is also a huge part of Max's character development, causing him to evolve into a dynamic character. Max displays friendship towards Kevin by not judging him based on his disability, respecting him, going out of his way to be present for Kevin, and helping him navigate the world around him.
