Guillotine is when the prisoner's head would be chopped off by a sharp blade. People thought it was a more efficient and quicker way to end one's life, as opposed to hanging. It didn't really work, because the nerve endings would still fire for a few minutes, causing the face to twitch.

Explain what the Dreyfus Affair was and why it was so controversial.
Dreyfus had been accused of treason against France and given a sentence of 5 years of solitude. Later, it was discovered that he had been set up and the French government had made a mistake, but still found something to charge him with, instead of admitting they were wrong. Some people did not support France for not admitting their fault and others supported France because they still saw it as Dreyfus committing a crime.
