When/Why do the plagues occour in the story of Moses?

After God called Moses to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, he and his brother Aaron approached Pharaoh to request their release. However, Pharaoh refused and instead increased their burden. God then sent a series of plagues upon Egypt to demonstrate His power and compel Pharaoh to let the Israelites go.
