When the last caretaker left, she recorded one final journal entry.
“I packed the emergency beacons myself before departure.
I remember that much clearly.
During the first solar storm after I left, the lighthouse automatically jettisoned some of them. That’s standard procedure — it always sacrifices half to protect the rest.
Weeks later, a salvage ship docked without permission. They didn’t take anything, but they did leave a small case behind. I inventoried it afterward: three beacons, intact.
Much later — long after the storm debris cleared — Command sent a resupply pod. The manifest says it contained exactly as many beacons as were still active after the storm.
I know the final count because the lighthouse repeats it to itself every night when it runs diagnostics.

“I found the Glitch Queen in the server ruins.
She wasn’t hostile at first—just… tired.
She asked for a gift, then didn’t ask for it, then did again.
I gave her the stack of mana crystals I’d been saving, and she accepted them like she’d been waiting for them since before the game was patched.
Then she did something that felt like a joke. She split the stack into three equal parts, kept one, and handed me the other two like they were the wrong pieces.

The monster didn’t keep a normal diary. It wrote in a way that made the forest feel like it was watching.
“I don’t remember if I ate the villagers or the villagers ate me.
But I do remember the food.
I found a stash of glowing mushrooms in a cave that smelled like old lightning.
I ate a portion of them. I don’t know how much, because I am not good at numbers, only hunger.
Then I got interrupted by the Moth King, who offered me a trade:
“I will take half of what you have left,” he said,
“but I will give you back two mushrooms, because I am a fair monarch in a cruel world.”
I agreed because he looked like he could eat me if I refused.
After the trade, I wandered through the swamp until I found a shrine. The shrine gave me exactly the number of mushrooms I had after the Moth King took his share, plus three more, because the shrine thought I was a hero.
Then I slept.
When I woke, I had 31 mushrooms.
The strange thing is, the shrine didn’t give me a number; it gave me a feeling. The number is only true because I’m writing it down.
Also, the Moth King is still watching me from the trees.”
