What are the two main classifications of trees we have been discussing throughout the unit.
deciduous and coniferous
Why are Trees and forests important
1. logging, recreation, oxygen
What makes a deciduous tree?
shedding its leaves every year
ex: maple
What occurs in the upper canopy?
The top part of the forest that is like an umbrella covering the rest
What is an example of an decomposer
Fungi
Lichens
Bacteria
Heartwood
What is photosynthesis
How plants make their own food using sunlight and carbon dioxide
Flat circles cut from the trunk of a tree is called...
Cookies
The process by which trees make their own food is called
Photosynthesis
An example of a producer is
a plant, tree, an organism that feeds itself
What is the Cambium and the sapwood layers in the bark?
Cambium: Thin, yellowish layer, produce xylem cells every years allowing the tree to grow
Sapwood: water and nutrients are dissolved and transported here. surrounds the heartwood
Name the 4 types of margins (edges) a leaf might have
1. smooth
2. fine-toothed
3. serrated
4. scalloped
A plant is considered a tree if it... (3 things)
1. Is perennial
2. Has a woody trunk
3. Has leaves
What is the nutrient cycle?
Trees that die and start to decay will
Add nutrients to the soil
Trees grow well if ... (list 4 things)
1. outer bark is healthy
2. The leaves are healthy
3. Lots of sunlight and water
4. The soil is healthy
What are the four levels of the forest?
1. upper canopy
2. understory
3. Underbrush
4. Forest floor
In the water cycle precipitation comes down from the clouds, and lands back in the ocean. The next part of the cycle for this water would be?
Evaporation
How does the water cycle work?
Precipitation
Evaporation
Transpiration
Condensation
What are the four characteristics in leaves that we look at to determine the kind of tree it is?
type, shape, edges (margins), and arrangment
Explain the water cycle with a plant
Plants need water to live, they lose water through transpiration, and take water up through their roots.
All the water in an ecosystem is recycled, water goes into soil (precipitation), taken up by the tress, given off by trees (Transpiration), goes into the air as water vapor, condenses in the air and falls as precipitation.
The raw materials of photosynthesis, water and carbon dioxide, enter the cells of the leaf, and the products of photosynthesis, ______ _______, leave the leaf.
What leaves the leaf?
Sugar and Oxygen
How does the nutrient cycle work? give an example
Producer consumer decomposer
