Saint Bernards were used to rescue lost travelers in the Swiss Alps due to their exceptional sense of smell, high endurance, and innate ability to navigate treacherous, snowy terrain. Bred by monks at the Great St. Bernard Hospice starting in the 17th century, these dogs worked in packs to locate people buried under deep snow. They could locate travelers buried 10 to 20 feet under snow, even after avalanches. Their thick coats provided essential protection against freezing temperatures, while they worked to keep victims warm, sometimes licking their faces to keep them conscious until help arrived.
