What is the basic unit of voltage? (AM.I.A.K9)

The volt

100

What is the alloy number of the most commonly used aluminum alloy for A/C structural use? (AM.I.E.K1)

2024-T

100

What is used to keep corrosion from forming on structural aluminum alloy? (AM.I.G.K5)

An oxide coating or aluminum cladding.

100

What kind of knot is used for securing an airplane with a rope? (AM.I.F.K2)

Bowline.

100

Who is authorized to perform an annual inspection on an aircraft? (AM.I.I.K1)

A certificated A&P mechanic who holds and Airframe and Powerplant rating.

200

What instrument is used to measure voltage? (AM.I.A.K9)

The voltmeter

200

Why is a piece of steel tempered after it has been hardened? (AM.I.E.K2)

When steel is hardened, it becomes brittle. Tempering removes some of the brittleness.

200

Where is fretting corrosion most likely to occur on an A/C? (AM.I.G.K3)

In a location where there is a slight amount of relative movement between two components and no way for the corrosive residue to be removed as it forms.

200

What special precautions should be taken when towing an A/C that is equipped with a steerable nose wheel? (AM.I.F.K1)

Be sure that the nose wheel does not try to turn past its stops. Some A/C require the torsion links on the nose to wheel strut to be disconnected.

200

For how long must the record of a 100-inspection be kept? (AM.I.I.K4)

For one year or until the next 100-hour inspection is completed.

300

What is meant by impedance? (AM.I.A.K11a)

The total opposition to the flow of alternating current. It is the vector sum of resistance, capacitive reactance, and inductive reactance.

300

Why is it important that a piece of aluminum alloy be quenched immediately after it is removed from the heat treating oven? (AM.I.E.K2)

Any delay in quenching aluminum alloy after is it removed from the oven will allow the grain structure to grow enough that intergranular corrosion is likely to form in the metal.

300

Where is stress corrosion most likely to occur in an A/C? (AM.I.G.K3)

In any metal component that is continually under tensile stress. The metal around holes in castings fitted with pressed-in bushings is susceptible to stress corrosion.

300

What is the danger of using fuel that vaporizes too quickly? (AM.I.F.K11)

Vapor lock can occur in the fuel lines. This will shut off the flow of fuel to the engine.

300

What is a malfunction and defect report? (AM.I.I.K5)

Also known as FAA Form 8010-4, it is a voluntary reporting mechanism to report unusual problems or weakness not associated with expected wear.

400

What is used to neutralize spilled electrolytes from a lead-acid battery? (AM.I.A.K15)

A solution of bicarbonate of soda and water

400

What type of control cable must be used when pulleys are used to change the direction of cable travel? (AM.I.EK4)

Extra-flexible cable (7 x 19)

400

What tools are proper for removing corrosion from aluminum alloy? (AM.I.G.K7)

Aluminum wool or aluminum wire brushes. Severe corrosion can be removed with a rotary file.

400

What is meant by detonation in an A/C recip. engine? (AM.I.F.K5)

Detonation is an uncontrolled burning of the fuel in the cylinder of an engine. It is an explosion, rather than a smooth burning.

400

What determines if an alteration or repair is considered major? (AM.I.I.K7)

The list of the types of repairs and alterations that are considered major are listed in 14 CFR Part 43, Appendix A.

Explain the basic concept of digital logic, including RAM, ROM, NVRAM, logic gates, inverters, rectifiers, and flip flops. (AM.I.A.K22)

Transistors are used to construct circuits that act as digital logic gates. The purpose of a device is achieved by manipulating electric signals through logic gates.

RAM - Random Access Memory that is used for temporary storage in a computer system

ROM - Read-only memory, a type of nonvolatile memory in a computer that is not lost when the power of the computer is lost

NVRAM - Non-volatile random access memory which is retained even when power is lost

Logic Gates - Provide a set output with one or more inputs.

Inverter - When used as a logic function, converts a 1 to 0, and a 0 to 1

Rectifier - Converts AC voltage to DC voltage

Flip-Flop - An electrical circuit that can store a single binary signal. The binary state can change based on the input signal

500

What is an advantage of a vernier caliper over a micrometer caliper? (AM.I.E.K6)

The range of a vernier caliper is far greater than that of a micrometer caliper.

500

What causes corrosion? (AM.I.G.K2)

Corrosion attacks metal by chemical or electrochemical action and converts it into a metallic compound. Corrosion occurs because of the tendency for metals to return to their natural state. Conditions that can cause corrosion to develop/worsen are moisture (acts an electrolyte), oxygen (acts as a catalyst), chemicals, and temperature (accelerates the process).

500

What is meant by liquid lock in the cylinder of an A/C engine, and how is it cleared? (AM.I.F.K5)

Oil accumulates in the cylinders below the centerline of the engine and prevents the piston from moving to the top of its stroke. To clear a liquid lock, remove one of the spark plugs and turn the engine crankshaft until all of the oil is forced out of the cylinder.

500

What is the method of notifying the FAA of a change of address? (AM.I.I.K23)

Through the mail with the FAA's office in Oklahoma City, or online through the FAA's Airmen Services.
