This manual, announcement in October 2004, was considered the most complete, orchestrated effort in the history of the Church to unify the missionary effort.
What is Preach My Gospel. “[The] world . . . desperately needs the gospel of Jesus Christ.” [1] President Gordon B. Hinckley understood this truth. Yet during the 1990s he saw some trends in the missionary work of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that caused him concern. The first trend was the lack of convert retention. He felt strongly that if individuals made the investment to join the Church, they should remain a part of it. President Hinckley gave two general conference talks about retention in 1997 and followed them with a lengthy landmark address about missionary work broadcast via satellite to the leaders of the Church in February 1999. In that address, President Hinckley stated, “There is absolutely no point in doing missionary work unless we hold on to the fruits of that effort.” [2] President Gordon B. Hinckley, whose concern about new member retention, the inactivity of missionaries, stagnant baptism numbers, and the rote presentation of the missionary discussions led to the development of Preach My Gospel.

He raised prize-winning pigeons
Who is President Thomas S. Monson Bonus Story: When he was president of his teachers quorum, his adviser gave him a set of homing pigeons. "The male came back, but the female flew away—back to the adviser’s home. When Tom went to retrieve her, the adviser talked with him about a boy in the quorum who was not active. Tom replied, “I’ll have him at quorum meeting this week.” He took the pigeon home, but the next time he released the pair, she flew once again to the adviser’s home. When Tom retrieved the pigeon this time, the adviser talked about another boy who had not been coming to quorum meetings. Each time the pigeon was released, she returned to the adviser’s home, and each time Tom went to retrieve her, there would be a conversation about another boy. “I was a grown man,” President Monson recalls, “before I fully realized that, indeed, Harold, my adviser, had given me a special pigeon, the only bird in his loft he knew would return every time she was released. It was his inspired way of having an ideal personal priesthood interview with the teachers quorum president every two weeks. Because of those interviews and that old one-eyed pigeon, every boy in that teachers quorum became active.”

In 1918 President Joseph Fielding Smith shared a revelation about the redemption of the dead which became this section of the Doctrine and Covenants.
What is the 138th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants. President Joseph F. Smith was ill during the last six months of his life and spent much of his time confined to his room. His son, Elder Joseph Fielding Smith, spent many days with him taking dictation, tending to chores for him, and taking him for rides (see Smith and Stewart, Life of Joseph Fielding Smith, p. 200). At the October conference of 1918, six weeks before his death, President Smith said: “As most of you, I suppose, are aware, I have been undergoing a siege of very serious illness for the last five months. It would be impossible for me, on this occasion, to occupy sufficient time to express the desires of my heart and my feelings, as I would desire to express them to you, but I felt that it was my duty, if possible, to be present. … “… Although somewhat weakened in body, my mind is clear with reference to my duty, and with reference to the duties and responsibilities that rest upon the Latter-day Saints; and I am ever anxious for the progress of the work of the Lord, for the prosperity of the people of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout the world. … “I will not, I dare not, attempt to enter upon many things that are resting upon my mind this morning, and I shall postpone until some future time, the Lord being willing, my attempt to tell you some of the things that are in my mind, and that dwell in my heart. I have not lived alone these five months. I have dwelt in the spirit of prayer, of supplication, of faith and of determination; and I have had my communication with the Spirit of the Lord continuously.” (In Conference Report, Oct. 1918, p. 2.) Two weeks after the general conference Elder Joseph Fielding Smith wrote down the vision as his father dictated it to him (see Smith and Stewart, Life of Joseph Fielding Smith, p. 201). After it was endorsed by the counselors in the First Presidency and by the Quorum of the Twelve, it was published in the Improvement Era (Dec. 1918, pp. 166–70). During April conference of 1976 it was accepted as scripture and approved for publication in the Pearl of Great Price. In June 1979 the First Presidency announced that it would become section 138 of the Doctrine and Covenants. (See Historical Background for D&C 137.)

This fund, announced in 1849, provided assistance to over 30,000 individuals to travel to the Salt Lake Valley.
What is the Perpetual Emigration Fund. The PEF used both church assets and private contributions to aid impoverished converts to the LDS faith when they moved west. As funds were limited, converts seeking aid were ranked by their useful skills and by the duration of their membership in the church. Limits on funds led to innovative preparations and travel methods, including the establishment of handcart companies, to reduce expenses. Once established in their new homes, the converts were expected to repay the funds to the company in cash, commodities, or labor, with minor interest, so others could receive help. In 1887, during a period of disenfranchisement for the LDS Church, the U.S. Congress enacted the Edmunds–Tucker Act, which disincorporated the LDS Church and the PEF company. In 2001, the LDS Church established a modern variant of the PEF, dubbing it the Perpetual Education Fund. This new fund helps church members in mostly third-world countries gain an education. Again, once established in a new profession, church members are expected to repay the funds, with minor interest, so others can receive help. Unlike the original PEF, the Perpetual Education Fund is not an incorporated company that is separate from the LDS Church. In 2009, President Monson shared that, "The Perpetual Education Fund, established in 2001, continues to move forward. Since its inception, 35,600 young men and young women have been enrolled in the program and have trained to improve their skills and their employment opportunities. Thus far, 18,900 have finished that training. On average, with the 2.7 years of education they are now receiving, they are increasing their income by three to four times. What a blessing this is in their lives! This is indeed an inspired program."

What is the announcement of the construction of many smaller temples around the world. He originally announced 30 smaller temples and then said "I can only add that when these 30 or 32 are built, there will be more yet to come." In April 2014, Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said 85 percent of Latter-day Saints live within 200 miles of a temple. The biggest surge of temple construction came between 1999 and 2002, when church leaders dedicated 61 temples in four years. When President Hinckley became the President of the Church there were 47 temples; when he passed there were 124. Today there are 155 temples operating or under construction.
