Mildred and Richard Loving were married in 1958 in DC to avoid VA’s interracial laws. They were raided by police and sentenced to a year in jail. If they moved, they wouldn't need to serve the sentence. After lengthy legal battles, the Supreme Court ruled in 1967 that the VA laws were to be struck down.
