Realistic Fiction
A true story of a person’s life, written by another person.
Biography
A type of literature in which words are carefully chosen and arranged to create certain effects and feelings. It may use rhythm and rhyme.
Poetry
Fiction that is funny or with a goofy twist.
Humor
A true account of a person’s life written by that person.
Autobiography
A humorously exaggerated story about impossible events.
Tall tale
A suspenseful story in which someone solves a problem, crime, or explores a secret.
Mystery
A type of nonfiction that provides facts about one topic.
Informational Text
A type of fiction where characters are on a quest or in a survival setting.
Adventure
Stories where sports have an impact on the plot or main character.
Sports Fiction
A type of fiction written to be performed in front of an audience.
Drama
A fictional story that takes place in a historical setting. May include real people and events of historical importance.
Historical Fiction
A text focused on the romantic love and relationship between people.
Romance
A very old story that often starts with “once upon a time”. Most have magic, a human main character, and talking animals.
Fairy-Tale
A story that contains science and technology concepts (such as robots or time travel) and is usually set in the future or a different world.
Science Fiction
A story that tells about gods, heroes, or explains forces in nature.
Myth
A format of writing that can be within any genre. Use a sequence of art/pictures to tell a story. They are usually stand- alone stories with more complex plots.
Graphic Novel
A type of fiction in which the main characters are animals. In animal fantasy books, animals are given human characteristics of speech.
Animal Fiction
The traditions, customs, and stories passed down within a culture.
Folklore
A traditional story that has been passed down through generations by word of mouth.
Folk Tale
A traditional story based on real events and people from the past, but the facts are not verified.
Legend
A brief tale told to illustrate a moral or teach a lesson.
Fable
A futuristic, imagined society. Citizens are controlled through social or political systems aiming to create a “perfect” world.
