How is a topographic map presented in 2D or 3D

2D = two dimension (flat paper)

100

What are contour lines?

lines connecting equal elevation on the earth's surface

100
What percentage of the Earth surface is land?

30% land, 70% ocean

100

What is 0 degrees latitude called?

The equator

100

What major European city does O degrees longitude run through?

London

200

What is the purpose of making a topographic map of a given area (contour lines)

Can interpret in 3D what the area or landscape look like from reading the contour lines and any landforms shown.

200

What can inform you on a topographic map of the location of mountains, valleys and cliffs?

- Elevation would either increase or decrease

- Line direction and size would change

200

What continent is Australia a part of?

Australasia or Oceania

200

What degrees latitude is the North Pole?

90"N

200

What is 0' longitude called?

Prime Meridian

300

What elevation is sea level and WHY?

0ft or 0m

gravity is a consistent force pulling water down creating an equal and level ocean surface (not including ocean surface waves)

300
How do you know what direction a rivers flows on a topographic map?

1 - elevation and gravity

2 - contour line direction and 'V' shape over the river - flows in opposite direction.

300

What two North American rivers were listed on the project?

- Mississippi

- Colorado

300

What degrees is the tropic of capricorn?

23.5"S

300

What is longitude associated with (regards to effect on humans)

Day vs night

rotation of the earth on its axis

clock/time 24 hours

timezones

400

Why don't contour lines on a topographic map intersect or cross over each other?

A contour line represents a single elevation for that particular part of the earth's surface, there cannot be two different elevations for a single point on the surface.

400

When contour lines are close together, what does that represent on the landscape?

The landscape has a steep gradient up or down?

400

What city in the project was in South Africa?

Cape Town

400

What is the line of latitude - 66.5"N called?

Arctic Circle

400

If you are travelling EAST from London, would you have to add hours to your watch or subtract hours?

Add hours

500

What was the elevation on the top of the hill next to the high school during our lab?

265ft (above sea level)

500

What are the bold contour lines called which have the stated elevation in feet or meters?

Index contour lines

500

name three of the seas listed in the project

- gulf of mexico

- carribean

- sea of Japan

- Coral sea

- Black sea

- Arabian sea

Explain how global temperature is defined mostly on your specific latitude?

The sun's energy hits the planet in straight lines. The earth being a sphere creates curved edges on which the energy is absorbed. The equator is direct and consistent energy absorption, however the higher latitudes - polar regions are curved and spreads the energy out. Thus, equator and tropics are hot, polar regions are colder.

The international date line separates days, 24 hour difference. In hawaii its 4am Thursday, what DAY is it in New Zealand on the other side of the date line?

3am FRIDAY (a day ahead of Hawaii)
